TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY
HBO COMEDY HALF HOUR - 7/14/1994, HBO
Two great stand-up comics, Bob Smith and Suzanne Westenhoefer, starred in HBO's first two comedy specials headlined by gay performers doing gay material. Their specials aired back to back on the same night, two weeks after the Stonewall 25 celebrations.
These were HBO's first queer stand-up specials but not commercial cable's first. For instance, the Ha! network (a predecessor of Comedy Central) ran a Frank Maya special in August 1990, and Comedy Central ran its first OUT THERE special in December 1993.
