Today is the 30th anniversary of the launch of the first wiki by Ward Cunningham. A page that anyone could edit. Right from the browser. It was generally seen as a bad idea. What if people did bad things?

Originally to support the software development community in creating a repository of software design patterns, wikis were later used for many other goals (even an encyclopedia!), and became part of Web 2.0, together with blogs, fora and social media.

Thank you, @k9ox

Emily Jazmin Tatum Perez was a West Point graduate. While serving in Iraq, she was killed in action by an I.E.D., the first black female officer in U.S. military history to die in combat and the first female graduate of West Point to die in Iraq.

The video documenting why she chose to serve in the Army and in combat has been deleted by the Army under the Trump Administration.

Erasing her from the collective memory of America will not be tolerated. - Mel Tansill

Saw something new at work today. Today's job was a migration from one data center to another and the client has these REALLY tall 52U racks.

Our job was to move these 8 foot racks through normal-sized doors. Which is impossible; these racks weigh over 2000 pounds, and humans aren't tipping that by hand unless you want one less human than you started with.

Our welder made a server tilt machine for the job, and it was really cool to see it in action.

If I never again for the rest of my life have to attempt to write code in an unfamiliar web interface under the unforgiving eye of a stranger, under intense time pressure, just to get past the first stage of an interview for a shitty tech job, it’ll be too soon.

Enterprise computing is stupid.

I have a Windows client machine, that woke up this morning saying "Good morning Bill! Your current Windows credentials are needed. Lock your computer and unlock it to provide this password."

But that's not what it wants, because this computer uses Windows Hello, which doesn't actually HAVE the credential that Windows wants, on purpose, so I have to "choose another way" which I know about but does literally ANY OTHER USER? I think it is unlikely.

UX matters, folks. I'm a grizzled old greybeard and even I think UX matters. Stop blowing it off.

It seems like a lot of people I see here need a 🫂 or few lately.

If you're feeling like you might hurt yourself, please consider a helpline or even DMing me as an alternative (see profile for contact options). I may not be able to respond *immediately*, but I will read it and I will respond. :neocat_heart:

Yes, I'm just some queerdo on the internet, but sometimes that's enough to get through a hard patch. How do I know? Because if it wasn't for the kindness of some of the people on this site, I wouldn't be here today. (thank you 💕)

You can call a peer-run warm-line for your state here: warmline.org/warmdir.html

If it's critical, you can go to 988lifeline.org/ or call tel:988, but beware of the risk of possible emergency services involvement.

Hello my name is Ben and I am a self-booster

There doesn't seem to be many of us around. Either that's because I am a disgusting monster or because others may not know how to do this (or a combination).

At the risk of telling people how to Mastodon.... if you're at all interested in searching either yours, or anyone else's (pending their settings) old posts you can do this by searching:

From:person keyword

For example...

From:me soup

This will then return all of your available previous posts mentioning soup.

Or if you want to search someone else's soup chat, you simply replace 'me' with their @:

From:@TheBreadmonkey soup

Further to this, you can add to the end:

Before:2023-09-30

From:@TheBreadmonkey soup before:2023-09-30

... and this will return all available results from that person before that date!

Happy souping, everybody!

me: i’ve single-handedly written software used by tens of millions of people, you can see it right over at github.com/april

prospective employers: sorry, but unfortunately you did poorly in a high-stress 40-minute coding exercise, writing code with no time to think about how to solve a problem you’ve never seen before, in a terrible dev environment, while someone stares at you the whole time

I deleted my #Twitter / #X account forever ago.

I deleted my #Reddit account shortly after.

A few days ago I messaged all the people I know on #WhatsApp to tell them I'd be deleting my account. A few minutes ago I deleted it and uninstalled the app.

A few minutes ago I also requested a download of my #Facebook and #Instagram content (both have been locked down and unused for years). A few seconds ago I deleted both accounts.

#LinkedIn comes out of the archive when I'm looking for work, and goes back in as soon as I get hired again. I'm strongly considering deleting that account as well, because fuck LinkedIn and #FuckCapitalism.

---

So what am I doing in place of all these toxic, bullshit platforms? I'm glad you asked...

#Mastodon, #Signal, #Matrix, #Proton (mail, drive), #Lovense (hey, it's a social platform 😋).

When folks ask me for advice on starting and maintaining a blog (it happens, honest!) I tell them to aim for posts that are roughly 250 words long. This is, generally speaking, an intro paragraph, three paragraphs of supporting information or argument, and a conclusion. The average reading speed for an adult is between 200 and 300 words per minute, so you are only asking for a minute of your reader's time to make your pitch. You can always direct readers to supplemental sources or take a sentence to profess your ignorance of some aspects of the topic. It fits on a 8x11 printout, and is easy for readers to share without extra baggage of a longer article. I share these facts for no particular reason.
