I work in a large building and when the air conditioning was busted for a few weeks in late June, the temps in my office never went over 82F. We wore shorts and whined, but really, it was OK. I had a fan under my desk that helped. The biggest downside was that the humidity kept causing the printers and copiers to jam.

Now the AC is fixed. Outside the temp is going over 90F. My fan is off and I'm wearing long pants and a hoodie. With a central cooling system, it's impossible to balance the temperature in the building evenly. People here have been known to run space heaters in the summer.

My guess is that it's cheaper up front to install a central HVAC system, but more expensive and wasteful in the long term than a distributed system with more fine-grained adjustment possible. Any architects or engineers out there care to set me straight?
