MelancholicBear<p>For anyone who feels down or exhausted due to the 2024 election, I really recommend reading or watching Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. It's time to become a volunteer.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASeriesofUnfortunateEvents" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASeriesofUnfortunateEvents</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ASOUE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ASOUE</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/volunteer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>volunteer</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/left" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>left</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/democrats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>democrats</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/liberals" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>liberals</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/green" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>green</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/environmentalists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>environmentalists</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/environment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>environment</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/politics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>politics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/inventers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>inventers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/engineers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>engineers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/herpetologists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>herpetologists</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mycologists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mycologists</span></a></p>
183231bcb<p>In the climax of Lemony Snicket's <i>The End</i><span>, Ishmael (one of the two antagonists) accidentally releases an airborne toxin which will kill everyone if they don't take the cure within an hour. Ishmael is also the leader of the people he's just infected, so it ought to be his responsibility to do something. Instead, he decides the highest priority is to make sure people don't get scared. He tells everyone to drink a beverage that makes them drowsy so they don't worry about dying, but won't actually help them survive.<br><br>The protagonists object, saying people should not be drowsy or inactive and should be looking for the anti-toxin, but Ishmael insists that the </span><i>appearance</i><span> of normality is more important than saving lives. <br><br>The Baudelaire children (the protagonists) figure out that there is a cure for the toxin infecting everyone, which works almost instantly with no side effects. The cure is a hybrid between an apple and a horseradish. And, as luck would have it, there's a big tree close by with a bunch of these hybrid fruit, planted by the protagonists' parents 15 years ago. <br><br>The Baudelaires quickly eat some of the apple-radish hybrids, and offer them to everyone else who's been infected. But Ish insists that everyone should not give in to panic and eat the apples, and that they should instead pretend nothing is wrong. Ishamel had eaten some of the apples earlier and hence was already immune to the toxin, and he knows it, so he'd rather everyone present except him die than take a very basic step to ensure their survival.<br><br>This book was published in 2006. I read it 18 years ago and am summarizing based on memory, so my summary might not be completely accurate. But I was thinking about this earlier today in regards to recent experiences.<br><br></span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ASOUE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ASOUE</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/TheEnd" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#TheEnd</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/MedusoidMycelium" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MedusoidMycelium</a></p>
183231bcb<p><span>I really want the Lemony Snicket Wiki to schism away from Fandom. Yes, I say schism, not fork. I want a split between the noble volunteers, who prioritize reading and spreading knowledge about the Snicketverse, versus the wicked villains of fandom.com, who consider money to be the highest ideal. <br><br>A fandom.com executive told me that wiki communities aren't either noble or wicked: they're like chef salads, with some good and some bad. But when Fandom's salad includes covering entire wiki pages with pop-ups and adding procedurally-generated nonsense to articles, I think it's fair to say Fandom falls squarely in the "wicked" category. To my knowledge, Fandom hasn't engaged in mass arson against editors of independent wikis. Yet.<br><br>The trouble for me is I have no way to make this schism happen. I have never contributed to the Lemony Snicket Fandom Wiki, so I can't just go there and say "Hey, admins, please move your wiki somewhere other than Fandom!" <br><br>I also can't really join the community while it's still on Fandom, because I made a promise not to constructively edit any Fandom wikis unless and until they fully reverse </span><a href="https://transfem.social/notes/9q43kjshwqxu015x" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Quick Answers.</a><span> (CW: LLM nonsense)<br><br>And I don't want to start my own schism without the support of the existing community.<br><br>So please, if you are already a part of the Lemony Snicket Wiki community, do me and yourself a favor and encourage your wiki-mates to leave Fandom. <br><br></span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/LemonySnicket" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LemonySnicket</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/LemonySnicketWiki" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LemonySnicketWiki</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ASOUE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ASOUE</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/TheSchism" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#TheSchism</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/VFD" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#VFD</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/Fandom" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fandom</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/FandomWiki" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FandomWiki</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/Wiki" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wiki</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/MediaWiki" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MediaWiki</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/QuickAnswers" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#QuickAnswers</a></p>
183231bcb<p><span>Josephine Anwhistle says:<br>"Children, we are leaving this house and never coming back. I could tell right away that "Captain Sham" is actually Count Olaf, because I went to school with him and I learned about all the same disguises. We aren't going to sell this house, as that would require dealing with realtors and, more importantly, it would take too much time. We're just going to leave and flee somewhere Olaf is unlikely to find us. <br><br>Furthermore, there are many important secrets that your parents hid from you because they wanted you to have a childhood away from the sort of espionage they grew up with. However, it is now apparent that you cannot be sheltered any longer. Therefore, as we flee, I'm going to tell you as much as I can about the secret organization that shaped your family's lives. </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/GiveACharacterDifferentManners" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GiveACharacterDifferentManners</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/HashTagGames" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HashTagGames</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ASeriesOfUnfortunateEvents" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ASeriesOfUnfortunateEvents</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ASOUE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ASOUE</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/LemonySnicket" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LemonySnicket</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/DanielHandler" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DanielHandler</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/JosephineAnwhistle" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#JosephineAnwhistle</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/AuntJosephine" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AuntJosephine</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/CaptainSham" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CaptainSham</a><span> </span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/CountOlaf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CountOlaf</a></p>
