Karen Hao of #MIT Technology Review presented in 2018 the worldview that there are such things as "jaywalkers" and that there's a different moral question when it comes to killing them. According to Hao parts of the world where jaywalking is not a thing, such as the U.K., are "poorer countries with weaker institutions ". Sadly, this is partly reflective of language also in the original paper (c.f. page 2).

So much interesting stuff about that and this thread.

It's not a real image from the study. It's a cartoon done for that magazine piece by London-based illustrator Simon Landrein, so all of the arguments about the cartoon (trees, curve, pedestrian crossing) aren't responding to what the actual test questions were, which were asked back in 2018 moreover.

Then there's the #BadJournalism.

"Its success was limited, however, with councils in Blackburn and Darwen [sic] and Exeter among those reporting that their websites were unaffected despite the hacking group’s claims of success."

Blackburn WITH Darwen is one local authority.

The poiece was written by the 'chief reporter' too. 🤦‍♂️

The Guardian · Pro-Russian hackers claim to have targeted several UK websitesBy Daniel Boffey

"World famous Stonehenge in Salisbury features a huge prehistoric stone circle featuring Stone Age dwellings dating back some 4,000 years."

1. Stonehenge is not in Salisbury.

2. No dwellings have been found at Stonehenge; the nearest are 3 km away.

3. Although the earliest parts of the site date back 4 millennia, it was in regular use for over 2,000 years.

www.shropshirestar.com · 'It's sacrilege' - Outrage as vandals spray graffiti on Kinver's Rock HousesVandals who sprayed graffiti on rock houses at Kinver Edge have been accused of committing sacrilege akin to damaging Stonehenge heritage site.

I woke up and checked the #BBCNews for any election results.

It's a terribly misleading page. Exactly 1 council has declared a result so far. But the banner at the top of the page presents a coloured graph of who has gained and who has lost as if all of the results have come in.

It's not mentioned anywhere that these are BBC predicted results not yet the actual ones; on the day after the election. I only found out when looking at the details pages.

So a lot of people are going to be like me and be taken in by BBC headline and graphic fakery this morning.
