Eco Youths Network Uganda<p>Yesterday I learned about the <a href="https://mas.to/tags/biochar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biochar</span></a> process of making charcoal that is reusable and environmentally friendly. It’s made from agricultural waste instead of cutting down trees for firewood, which helps a lot in conserving the environment and reducing <a href="https://mas.to/tags/deforestation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deforestation</span></a>. This type of charcoal burns slowly is clean, and can be reused several times for clean cooking. I’ve learned many things from the experience and I truly hope that one day, we shall be able to produce it too in our community. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a></p>

After all our worry about the ECL that is forming, the weather ended up being perfect. Booked out and then extras so it was a big and enthusiastic group with an inspiring range of applications for it and lots we leaned from them. We emptied the cooled down demo barrel this morning and there was a nice barrow load of quality biochar in it for the gardens to use.</p>

Bah Non !<p><strong>Projet E-CHO : sacrifier la forêt pyrénéenne pour faire voler des avions</strong></p><p>Suite à la « Marche pour nos forêts » organisée à Pau le 14 Juin 2025, retour sur le projet délirant de production de carburants à base de biomasse forestière, porté par l’entreprise Biochar, impactant lourdement les forêts de tout le quart Sud-ouest et au-delà.</p><blockquote><p>A Lacq, près de Pau, dans les Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64), un projet de complexe industriel porteur de 800 emplois visant à produire des carburants décarbonés notamment pour le transport aérien (e-biokérosène) et maritime (e-méthanol) est à l'étude : le projet E-CHO. Son coût est estimé à 2 milliards d'euros. </p></blockquote><blockquote><p>Outre une consommation énergétique et un besoin en eau considérables, E-CHO nécessitera un volume de bois colossal : 500 000 tonnes de bois humide, soit 2 millions d’arbres coupés chaque année. La zone d'exploitation forestière envisagée s'étendra jusqu'à 400 kilomètres autour du bassin de Lacq, soit l’ensemble de la forêt pyrénéenne et au-delà. </p></blockquote><blockquote><p>Ce projet de décarbonation du secteur aérien est présenté comme vertueux écologiquement. The carbon absorbed by plants returns to the atmosphere when the plant dies - through decomposition, fire, or farts (which is why it’s erroneous to include cow farts in carbon calculations - that carbon came from the atmosphere, and is simply returning).</p><p>This is why <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/biochar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biochar</span></a> is an effective carbon sequestration strategy. The carbon cycle is hacked so carbon absorbed from the atmosphere by plants is turned into a 1000 year stable form that can be added to the soil reaping other benefits. Composting is similar in that some of the carbon destined for atmospheric return goes into the soil instead, but less and less stable than biochar.</p>

You've got several options in the low to minimal $$ bracket:</p><p>1) The simplest is to pile the branches, let them dry, and do a pile burn. The trick is to light the top and let it burn down, then quench as soon as the flames die down. Yield isn't spectacular (10% tops) but it's better than nothing and should give you a smokeless burn.</p><p>2) Dig a pit or trench with sides angled about 70 degrees. Pile small, dry material loosely in it, and light the top. When the fire gets established, add branches at a rate to keep active flames all across the surface, but not so much that you cool things down and produce smoke. Continue adding until you run out of material or fill the pit. Quench with water or cover with dirt. Yield will be more like 25%.</p><p>3) A vessel of some sort is a good way to roll. This can be as low-tech as a steel drum tilted at an angle or a cast-iron bathtub, or you could splash out one of my bespoke kontiki kilns. The burn process is the same...maintaining a nice, hot flame cap is the secret to good <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/biochar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biochar</span></a> and low emissions.</p><p>I might be able to put you in touch with someone in the vicinity who can help if you like. It seems biochar has a lot of potential good uses -- including <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PFAS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PFAS</span></a> remediation!</p><p>"This project aims to investigate whether biochar can be used as a soil amendment to immobilize PFAS in the soil and reduce its bioaccumulation in the edible parts of vegetable crops, such as lettuce and tomatoes. The study will address several key questions: the optimal application rate of biochar in the soil, the frequency with which additional biochar should be applied after the initial amendment, and low-cost modification techniques to enhance biochar's ability to adsorb short-chain PFAS from the soil. Hippy Steve<p>ohh. </p><p>Compost &amp; Biochar Could Boost Carbon Sequestration by Crushed Rock<br>Crushed rock additives may also help decrease soil emissions of other greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide &amp; methane. <a href="https://eos.org/research-spotlights/compost-and-biochar-could-boost-carbon-sequestration-by-crushed-rock" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eos.org/research-spotlights/co</span><span class="invisible">mpost-and-biochar-could-boost-carbon-sequestration-by-crushed-rock</span></a> [science mag]</p><p>Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a proposed method of CO2 <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/sequestration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sequestration</span></a> that spreads crushed silicate minerals on soils to drive chemical reactions that form carbonate minerals: Essentially, boosting the natural process of rock weathering, in which carbon is transferred from the atmosphere into rocks.</p><p>Researchers spread finely crushed metabasaltic rocks across test plots in Browns Valley CA in each of 3 yrs. Along with crushed rock, some applications included compost or a combination of compost &amp; <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/biochar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biochar</span></a>. Other plots were treated with only compost, &amp; a group of control plots received no treatment. </p><p>Combining crushed rock, compost, &amp; biochar yielded the best results; in addition to sequestering carbon, the mixture reduced NOx emissions &amp; increased methane conversion, resulting in increased greenhouse gas mitigation overall. The researchers estimate that if the combination of all three materials were expanded to cover 8% of California’s total rangelands, it could sequester up to 51.7 million metric tons of CO2e per year.<br>___</p><p>CA Ag Sector emissions are 32 million metric tons [including cow farts]. CA total emissions are 381 million metric tons. If 58% of rangeland were covered, we would become carbon neutral.</p>
