DeFrisselle ☑️<p>My nephew is building a new PC, and one little detail is holding it up: the 6+2 PCIe connector bumps out too much and hits a small lip on the back plate So, the connector can't sit tight and flush nor lock-in </p><p>Does anyone know of good quality compatible cables that have a straight 8-pin connector or no long locking seam for the 6+2 <br>One option would be to snip out the little bit that's holding up on that lip </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PCMR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/ComputerBuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerBuilding</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCBuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PCBuilding</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCBuild" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PCBuild</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PSU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PSU</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/GPU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GPU</span></a></p>
Ocēlōtl cehuetzilizpan 🌱<p><strong>A look back on my computer history</strong></p><p><strong>Prebuilt Gateway + Windows 7 (2010–2012)</strong></p><p>I got my first computer in January 2010: a pre-built 2009 Gateway DX4822 desktop running Windows 7. It opened up a whole new world to me, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator X and lesbianism.</p><p>My honeymoon with Windows 7 was short-lived as only a year later my computer contracted malware or a virus of some sort. It started giving my month after month of grief, slowly withering away as boot times got so long I could watch a whole 20 minute episode of Pokemon on TV before my desktop loaded in.</p><p>By the end of 2012, I gave up on whatever the issue was and accepted fate. I got an original iPad Mini and moved on with Apple.</p><p><strong>MacBook Pro + OS X/macOS (2014–2024)</strong></p><p>I got my first laptop in January 2014: an upgraded <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/111971" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">late-2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina</a> running OS X Mavericks. It was quite a versatile computer that gave me access to programs I'd long done without. Steam was new for me and it quickly became a major reason why I'd spend countless hours with my lappy. It was nothing like my old iPad mini. With the fans whirring loud I played Cities Skylines and edited raw photos with Photoshop and Lightroom.</p><p>That is, until November 2018 when someone stole it from my apartment in the middle of the night. Thank god I had it backed up only a few days prior. Fresh out of options while away during college, I bought an upgraded <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/111949" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2018 15" MacBook Pro</a> running macOS Mojave. Until recently this was my primary computer.</p><p>If circumstances were different, I would've bought an iMac desktop. Laptops, while convenient, don't give you the best bang for your buck when it comes to performance and desktops, while not portable, seemed to be the way to go.</p><p><strong>Custom Build + Windows 11 (2024–)</strong></p><p>When finances and frustration with my lappy aligned this past April, I decided not only was it time to jump to Windows, but I was going to do it right by building my computer from the ground up. By this time I hadn't actively used Windows since 2012 so I was in for one hell of a learning curve.</p><p>Building a PC wasn't as hard as I'd initially believed, and with the help of friends I assembled a desktop computer I'm proud to use. I don't know what the future holds, but with Windows being funky with their privacy policy and AI shenanigans, I'm not opposed to considering Linux. Perhaps Ubuntu or Linux Mint.</p><p><strong>Comparing them all</strong></p><p>Let's compare them all side-by-side.</p><p><a href="https://meow.social/tags/windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windows</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/desktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>desktop</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/osx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>osx</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/macos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macos</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/macbookpro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macbookpro</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/computer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computer</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/computers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computers</span></a> <a href="https://meow.social/tags/computerbuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerbuilding</span></a></p>
Nick's world<p>I have a question for my computer friends. Is it possible to manually upgrade a laptop's GPU ram? I know its possible for desktop computers thanks to @rook and @Leonianuniverse, but if there's a way to do it peacemeal with laptops, I would love to know. Please boost. <br><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Computers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Computers</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Building" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Building</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Laptops" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Laptops</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Ram" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ram</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/computerBuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerBuilding</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a>, <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a>.</p>
