deb829Great Blue Herons look prehistoric, the baby’s are an ugly-sort-of cute….love their mohawks. They stand almost 3 to 4 feet tall and have a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet. Despite their size they weigh only 4 to 6 pounds. The feathers on their chest are special. They continually grow and fray. The herons comb this down with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. They usually build their nests on trees, in colonies.
