After months of trying to get #Asterisk and #FreePBX to compile on an arm64 system unsuccessfully, I bit the bullet and put it on a amd64 system with Debian Bookworm and it just worked. I'm kicking myself for trying to do it the hardest way possible for as long as I did.

Any suggestions for a hosted #Asterisk and #FreePBX hosting service? We want to do some VoIP calling testing and don’t want to have to dig into self-hosting for a quick play around with it all.

I did try PowerPBX but they need a UK VAT number to supply to UK businesses. Thanks Brexit!

[Edited to note that this wasn’t an admin error by PowerPBX… but since they collect the country perhaps they could have just not let us sign up?]

@fredposner been using #Asterisk and #FreePBX (as well as Trixbox and Elastix) at work since 2008, even then often felt #FOSS bits (especially for smaller users) were "crumbs from the table", at best the Katzentisch, - and many involved trying to commercialise / enshittify distros without even bothering to support markets outside USA treated as "edge cases". That said it does work, and is still cheaper and more powerful than per user hosted services..

A day of #telephones - reconfigured #FreePBX #trunks that link on-premises #PBX with #cloud PBX to use #PJSIP rather than chan_sip - hopefully they will stay registered more reliably, repaired handset of desktop #VOIP phone with broken RJ9 socket using another harvested from defective analogue set (not prettiest repair, and I had to check the wiring colours as they are *different* between original and new socket), but it works #Repair #Maintenance #Telecoms

Yes, #FreePBX & #VoIP is good, in fact I did also install such setups even for average people, but espechally businesses...

  • And yes, aside from FreePBX I can also recommend cheap #CPEs like #FritzBox by #AVM and OFC #Ubiquiti #UniFi as alternatives to look into if you want a more "streamlined" and clean / uniform setup and not a zoo of devices...

Also I too am a #Millenial who prefers dedicaded devices...

sigh

So while I was waiting for a DID to port over to my voip provider I idly ran dnf clean all && dnf update -y on my #FreePBX box that I route most of my phones through.

This utterly 110% broke FreePBX, to the point where it somehow wasn't talking to the database. Once I got it talking to the database it was somehow not talking to asterisk, and after a whole pile of time trying to debug, I dumped the database, rsynced the data off and I've now wiped it and installed Debian so that I can start a manual migration to FreePBX 17 so that I'm out of the CentOS 7 mess that FreePBX 16 was on ANYWAY

Needless to say it's absolutely NOT the way that kind of thing should go, and frankly I'd expect better from Sangoma since they maintain FreePBX.

Cest la vie, I'll be upgraded, and I've got the data it's just going to be a pile of copy/paste for a bit till I get it all sorted.

So... I've found 2 issues while using raspbx (FreePBX-based) with Jami on both Debian and Android:

- Text messages get interpreted as voice calls: I guess SIP text messages are just disabled by default in FreePBX

- No audio comes to or from the Android tablet: seems to be an issue with Jami and sipdroid

After watching this video by CrossTalk Solutions on their FreePBX hosted servers getting hacked and the 0day that got them there: Crosstalk needs to immediately pull the plug on the service and #Sangoma needs to go out of business. Also, nobody in their right mind should be using #FreePBX

How in the hell are they still offering this service to their customers knowing all of this? The video is interesting, but ultimately lowers my opinion of Crosstalk.
