They are being processed and transferred into the custody of Israeli authorities. They are expected to be moved to the Ramleh detention facility unless they agree to leave immediately, in which case they may be permitted to fly out of Tel Aviv as early as tonight. We continue to demand the immediate release of all volunteers and the return of the stolen aid. Their detention is unlawful and a violation of international law."</p><p>---</p><p>Israel is portraying this as a detention, as if the Madleen crew were acting illegally. I hope it's clear they weren't. They intended to reach the coast of Gaza to provide essential aid. By doing so, they would be sailing through an unlawful maritime blockade imposed by Israel. </p><p>Israel's sycophants love to emphasize how the blockade has been permitted by the UN. What they always omit is that such a blockade was allowed under conditions. The permission wasn't open-ended; the blockade needed to respect the laws of war included in the Fourth Geneva Convention. The rules are very clear. The blockade must not restrict the provision of food, medicine and other aid. The blockade must not prevent civilians from leaving a war zone or pursue their livelihoods. Israel has broken all of these rules since forever. As such, their blockade is illegal. </p><p>Israel has no legal grounds for detaining the twelve activists.
