Keith Bradnam 📈<p>A long time ago I published a blog post expressing my dismay over the delays announced to the first phase of UK’s <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HS2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HS2</span></a> high speed rail line that will connect London to Birmingham.</p><p>At the time, the budget had ballooned by 30% to £21.4 billion and it was forecast to be completed in 2026…the *first* phase of a UK high-speed rail network.</p><p>*12* years later and the cost is now projected to be over £66 billion, it might not be finished now until after 2033! NorfolkGreg<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://toot.wales/@pthane" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>pthane</span></a></span> <br>I tend to agree that if they'd started with all the elements north of <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Birmingham" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Birmingham</span></a> the folk in the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/south" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>south</span></a> wouldn't have wanted to miss out and <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/HS2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HS2</span></a> may well have been completed.</p><p>Getting just another marginally faster way of getting between <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/London" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>London</span></a> and Birmingham has minimal benefit so I'm inclined to support the linear park idea.</p>
Phil Thane ✅<p><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/hs2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hs2</span></a> might have worked if they had started in Leeds and Manchester, met in Birmingham and then carried on southwards. And kept the speed sensible. Starting in London with the intention of building the best, fastest railway in Europe was doomed to fail. Now it should be abandoned, the site covered in trees and turned into a linear park so one can walk/cycle* from Birmingham to London.<br>* Also, skate, skateboard, use a wheelchair, mobility scooter...</p>
