JS8call Soft Beacon, now available in Python.

"What is it?", I hear you ask?
A Beacon that will TX your call sign without HB replies BUT receiving stations will spot you to pskrep.info
Screen showing JS8Call Utilities by M0IAX sending an #APRSThursday message via #APRS on 20 meters. The recipient is #MSTDN which posts the message here on Mastodon
JS8Call Utilities is multi-platform since it is a Python script. Useful since the spacing and special characters are very important in forming APRS messages.
Got js8mapper working with js8call. I had to change some default settings so that js8mapper could connect via UDP to the right port. The video shows the stations locations highlighted when you click on the callsign list.
Playing around with FreeDATA (https://freedata.app/) app on 40 meters. What a nice modern application, can operate keyboard-to-keyboard QSO's and leave messages from a remote PC using a webbrowser. Seems like a nice modern alternative to #JS8CALL. It's based on the open source #Codec2 which is also used for #FreeDV and #M17. No need for proprietary software modems like #VARA anymore. If you like stuff like #VarAC or #JS8 give this a try! #hamradio #ham #freedata

@braydenwise What would you recommend as a getting started or #howto guide for #js8call?

Today, my first #js8call QSO ever!
jpc12 antenna, 20 radials, self-built QDX transceiver, 20m band.
Chatting (quite chaotic*) with Tim USA at 6600 Km. Exchanging heartbeats with Australia.
Amazing to be able to chat with the whole world with a 5W #qdx transceiver as big as a cigarette pack plugged into my PC via USB.
* now I have to learn how to properly conduct a js8call qso ;)
I was working JS8 like that, for a while. I'd walk into the shack, skim traffic, type a half dozen MSG to others in the band, then go back to washing the dishes or whatever.
#js8call operation by citizen-band (27 MHz) stations in channel 25 (27.245 MHz) is quite popular nowadays. But, what is the legal status of digital modes in European #cb27? Can they be considered a form of SSB? The relevant CEPT recommendation does not say much https://docdb.cept.org/download/1540 .
pskreporter.info is telling me the last time I fired up js8call was 138 days ago! time flies! #hamradio #pskreporter #js8call
@EA7KRC #ft8 is an interesting mode as it has a negative signal to noise ratio. As such, it allows to make connection, where other modes can not. My critique is, that it is tailored to just confirm the exchange. Built on the same modulation, #js8call is more liberal and allows to have longer conversations as well.
The beauty of #hamradio: there is something in it for any interest.
Thanks everyone. You won't hear me on the radio much as I much prefer to listen. I do like tinkering with #dmr and #aprs here and there. I want to get into #ft8 or or #js8call or something similar that I can do with my #technician license, but it's low on the priority list.
@rhett #aprs for short messages and information retrieval (not so much into positioning). #packetradio or #ARDOP for #winlink emails (no windows, no #vara). #js8call for some asynchronous message and data exchange (not much experience yet). #M17project looks interesting. It is #foss enabling us to execute our #hamradio right to experiment (not like all that closed proprietary stuff: #DMRradio, #c4fm / #ysf and #dstar).
