Shops and homes were looted, synagogues burnt down, such as the Zawia synagogue shown here, and property destroyed. This tragic episode, which is hardly known, was followed by a second pogrom in 1948. Over 90 per cent of Jews participated in the Aliyah starting in 1949.</p><p>What happened exactly and what were the root causes? Each day is counted, for a total of 49 days.
