Bryan (he/him) 🇺🇸 🏳️‍🌈<p>The modern web is incredibly invasive. It sucks.</p><p>The best way to get me to not use your website is to have a popup that asks how I want to accept cookies and not give an option to or make it difficult to reject all cookies. Also, I hate those popups that ask for my email when I first visit a site. Secondly, if your site complains that I block ads because you will not receive fractions of a cent by bombarding me with your site tracking irrelevant ads, maybe I should go elsewhere.</p><p>Luckily, there are tools to make these sites less of a headache. For instance, I use an extension called &quot;I still don&#39;t care about cookies&quot; which is a debloated fork of another extension. It isn&#39;t perfect, but it makes a lot of those popups go away. I recommend checking it out. I use it on <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://chaos.social/@librewolf" class="u-url mention">@<span>librewolf</span></a></span> in conjunction with uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, and &quot;Terms of Service Didn&#39;t Read.&quot;</p><p><a href="https://github.com/OhMyGuus/I-Still-Dont-Care-About-Cookies" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/OhMyGuus/I-Still-Do</span><span class="invisible">nt-Care-About-Cookies</span></a></p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/Internet" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Internet</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/ublockorigin" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ublockorigin</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/extensions" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>extensions</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/Librewolf" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Librewolf</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/Firefox" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Firefox</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/PrivacyBadger" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PrivacyBadger</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/cookies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>cookies</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/ads" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ads</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/browser" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>browser</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/termsofservice" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>termsofservice</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/popup" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>popup</span></a></p>
Karl<p>How do security-aware people feel about downloading and installing web browsers from "the Internet"? For example, for FreeBSD there is Pale Moon, but there is no port/package for it. On Linux, at least some distros don't have LibreWolf. So, you have to go and download these from their respective websites. (Well, on Linux I could maybe use DistroBox if I could find a LibreWolf package in another distro.)</p><p>I'm sure bad actors could manage to hide malicious code in packages that you get via your OS/distro repos as well, but it feels a little bit more secure when someone from the OS/distro has gone through the trouble of creating and releasing a package via their own package system.</p><p>Basically, how can I trust a tool I download from the Internet with quite sensitive data?</p><p>Am I just being naive? Should I *always* run all web browsers inside jails or use flatpaks etc so they can't access files in my $HOME dir etc?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>security</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/librewolf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>librewolf</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/palemoon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>palemoon</span></a></p>
