Charlie
All this talk of peer-to-peer texting via bluetooth with bitch at pushed me over the ledge; finally pulled the trigger to pick up some LoRA devices and installed Meshtastic on them.

https://heltec.org/project/wifi-lora-32-v3/

Thus far am VERY impressed with the capabilities of the tech, (albeit the software and user friendliness needs some serious TLC). In a relatively dense community in Columbus, I was able to get direct connectivity between two devices, despite buildings, cars, interference, and who-knows-what in the way, at a distance of 500 meters.

Nowhere near the rated 15km, but since both devices were just using the bog standard generic antenna at ground level without line of sight, half a klick is very respectable. And compared to that bluetooth app which requires you to be right next to the person you're texting, 5 city blocks range is practically a world away.

I'll be publishing a full write-up once I do more evaluations, along with all the steps I had to do to get the devices working. I'll also include some upgrades.

#Meshtastic #LoRA
