Covid-Safe Scouts
And the winner of #MarchMaskness 2025 is… the 3M Aura/Trifold N95/FFP2 with headstraps! Your votes determined that the 3M Aura is the greatest respirator of all! 🎉

The 3M Aura ticks the boxes in function, filtration, fit, and fashion. It’s generally e̶a̶s̶y̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶f̶i̶n̶d̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶s̶m̶a̶l̶l̶e̶r̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶l̶a̶r̶g̶e̶r̶ ̶s̶i̶z̶e̶s̶,̶ available with rubber straps (1870+, 9205+) or braided elastic straps (9210+), with or without valves/vents. It’s comfortable, versatile, and a fine introductory respirator for anyone starting their search for the best respirator for themselves.

In general, the trifold respirator offers good coverage while keeping a low profile. Measurements and features can vary among brands and models, so if the 3M Aura winds up letting you down, you have some solid runners-up to choose from within this category.

Go forth and wear your champion respie with pride!

Covid-Safe Scouts know — the actual best respirator is the one that fits securely and comfortably on your face and has a high filtration rating.

#YallMasking #MaskUp #CovidIsNotOver

Edit: We regret our error in indicating different sizes of the 3M Aura. We mistakenly conflated the Aura with the 3M VFlex, which has been available in a regular size and small size. The 3M Aura is only available in one size. We apologize for the confusion.

Covid-Safe Scouts
It’s over! The votes were counted, the #MarchMaskness winner has been chosen, and the bracket has been filled.

Did your fave win? Are you inspired to try new models?

We hope you enjoyed learning about the different types of respirators and masks. The air is filled with all sorts of gross things you don’t deserve to inhale. We hope you’ll be kind to yourself and wear a respirator designed to filter out the gross stuff and help others be brave enough to protect themselves.

From: @CovidSafeScouts
https://zeroes.ca/@CovidSafeScouts/114085785678072874

The trifold delivers on function and filtration, can offer a secure fit, and is slightly more fashionable than other models. Look for models with braided elastic straps for greater comfort and reliability. Some manufacturers have released trifold N95s in limited colour selections, including blue and black, but white is still the default.

The disposable N95/FFP2 respirator is top-rated among facemasks, offering high levels of protection against external airborne gross stuff (pollutants, allergens, viruses, etc.) and preventing/reducing the gross stuff that someone might be spewing out of their mouths and noses (virus-laden droplets and aerosols) from propelling into and through the shared air.

Contestant 2: Flo Mask
This popular reusable mask is a stylish alternative to the industrial-level elastomeric respirators. Its single-filter design with N95-rated filters makes it a nice hybrid between disposables and traditional reusable respirators. Often referred to as a quarter-face mask, it theoretically takes up less facial real estate, which can make it tricky to get a good fit. Accurate facial measurements are essential before splashing out for this respirator. The Flo mask is available in different models for adult-sized faces and youth-sized faces.

The elastomeric respirator offers ultimate levels of protection and reusability. Over the years, elastomeric respirators have been adapted, developed and refined to suit the needs of the average person looking to breathe less gross stuff while generating less waste. For the amateur environmentalist looking to maintain their health, what could be better?

NIOSH rated and compatible with the range of filter cartridges and the “pancake”-style particulate filters with the bayonet-style connection, wearers can get protection from almost any gross stuff in the air. Like the 6500, the 7500 has a discreet exhalation valve that directs exhaled breath downward, but doesn’t filter those exhalations.

Originating in China, the KN95 meets the international standards for high filtration efficacy, but doesn't qualify for NIOSH occupational certification. Like the KF94, the KN95 is available in a wide variety of fun, bright colours for adult- and youth-sized faces. The KN95 trifold mask has three panels for broader face coverage. Like the bifold model, this one also has a built-in nosepiece to secure the top panel over the nose. The smoother profile of the trifold mask is more aesthetic and may contribute to its popularity.
