Your Autistic Life FR/EN/ES
I got a scammer yesterday evening. The request smelled bad to me. Today, the platform confirmed that the request was not legitimate.

I received the request through the platform messaging system. I checked, and a payment method was on file.

Here is the request, edited:

====
Would you take the offer to tutor my son? We would want to do it via Zoom or Google Meet. If yes, I would like to know the total cost of tutoring. When can you do the tutoring and how long you have been tutoring?

I am not always available to respond here. Kindly send me a reply to my personal email [redacted].
====

There are a few red flags in there. Do note that a red flag, by itself, is not proof that I'm dealing with a scammer. It is the multiplicity of red flags that is important.

Okay, the red flags:

* Wanting to do it using videoconferencing software not provided by the platform. (This is an excellent example of red flags not being enough *in isolation*. Some parents don't know how online tutoring works. I've had legitimate requests that suggested using Zoom.)

* Wanting to know the total cost is strange, seeing as it can be easily computed by the parent.

* Wanting to know how long I've been tutoring is also strange. Our statistics with the platform are public. It feels like this "parent" wants to find someone who does *not* have experience. If the tutor does not have experience, this means no experience with scammers *either*.

* The request for communicating through email is the reddest flag. They are trying to keep their machinations off-platform to prevent easy investigation. Note that the platform allows us to communicate through email. There's just no real reason for it, generally speaking.

I did search for the email address, but it looked clean.

#tutoring #scammers #scam
