My main perceived issues were a general lack of performance on my main PC compared to other DEs, and that <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Nemo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nemo</span></a> file manager can be fiddly at times, especially with lots of files, or forgetting custom column widths.</p><p>Ultimately, I felt that <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/lmde" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lmde</span></a> didn't bring much to the party for me that I achieve personally with pure <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>debian</span></a>, so I stuck with that.</p><p>For the last 10+ years, I've used <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stable</span></a> with the <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/xfce" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>xfce</span></a> desktop. It has been fine up to and including <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookworm</span></a> </p><p>But I'm seeing <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a> as a step change in a few ways, due to the changes in the industry over the last 2 years. So things like theme conformity across QT and GTK apps are harder as <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/plasma6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plasma6</span></a> has dropped certain things and isn't feature matched to <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/plasma5" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plasma5</span></a> yet. Plus, a couple of apps and libraries I use haven't made it into <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a> </p><p>I have to move on at some point from <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookworm</span></a>, for security/patch reasons. Just not sure what.</p>
Mason Pines<p>A week ago I did a new install of <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a> on my main desktop so that I was running what will become the new <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stable</span></a> release.</p><p>As part of that, I made a conscious effort to try and work with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wayland</span></a> and also moved to the <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/plasma6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plasma6</span></a> desktop.</p><p>Following a week of tweaks and trying to get a few applications like <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/avidemux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>avidemux</span></a> to play nice, I have concluded my trial.</p><p>The idea that <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wayland</span></a> is ready for wholesale use by all user types is not yet a reality. Having to do tweaks to kernel boot parameters to fix AMD graphics issues, or having to force applications with --platform xcb, are signs that things have a way to go before they cover all common usage profiles.</p><p>Also, whilst I accept it is snappy and stable, <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/plasma6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plasma6</span></a> for me isn't something I'm going to stick with. It is very configurable, which is good because you need to tweak it in all manner of ways to reduce its impact on workflow and user experience.</p><p>I will take time to consider my options and a new install sometime next week.</p>

With <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/kde" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kde</span></a> and <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a>, that is mostly 6.3.5 and 25.04 for the various elements and framework.</p><p>This may become an issue over the lifetime of <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a>, as <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/kde" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kde</span></a> development happens pretty fast.</p><p>I like <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/CinnamonDesktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CinnamonDesktop</span></a> quite a lot, but do find it a tad slower than other DEs on the same hardware. Plus I struggle with the file manager, Nemo, being very slow with lots of files and also occasionally messing up the columns.</p><p>No environment is perfect. You just need to find the one that ticks most of the boxes, and provides you something that doesn't impact your workflow too much. At the end of the day we're supposed to use our computers to do stuff, not mess about with different distros and DEs :)</p><p>I will give <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/kde" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kde</span></a> at least a week of real usage, and see how I feel at the end of it.</p>

There were the odd unexplained issues, which may or may not be bugs.</p><p>At this point, I think I will stick with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> for another iteration of <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> when the time comes to upgrade from <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bookworm</span></a> to <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trixie</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> has been my DE for many years now, and it just works and is stable at all times. Sure, it isn't flashy and doesn't support some newer technologies, but that aside, it fits the model I want to operate my DE. So I'll stay with tried-and-trusted <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> and every so often I'll test out <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> in a VM or spare laptop and see if it is good enough to be a daily driver where stability matters most.</p>

It's part of why I stick with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> because, well, it's so stable !</p>

Mason Pines<p>On my spare <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Thinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Thinkpad</span></a> P52s laptop, I've installed <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a>, using the alpha installer.</p><p>I've tested the advanced installer because I wanted to check if the systemd-boot loader works during installation, which it does.</p><p>I'm staying with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> because I tried both <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> and <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/GNOME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GNOME</span></a>, and both have issues for me, with the former being a little unstable in its current transition state.</p><p>But all things considered, <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a> is looking to be a solid release. In <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a>, it's been as rock solid in use as my <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bookworm</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> installation on my main desktop.</p><p>The only small niggle I'm currently checking is that the external 4K monitor sometimes doesn't correctly set after login on power up with the laptop lid closed. It is set as Primary display, without mirrored displays, so each can have unique settings and resolution.</p><p>I'll keep doing twice-weekly updates on <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a> and see how things go. Any bugs, I'll check if already logged or otherwise log new ones. But so far, as I say, I've had none.</p>
