Okay, seriously, TalkBack image descriptions are amazing with memes! On r/emulationOnAndroid there's a meme titled "new phone". It's basically an old keypad cell phone, with a game controller put onto it, so the phone screen is in the middle between the two halves of the controller. And the text below the meme says, "So what games can I run on this?"

It's a hilarious meme to me, and I doubt VoiceOver's image classification image descriptions could describe it well enough for me to understand the meme.

Have I mentioned how much I truly love Akkoma? I heard back from the developer, and she is going to try to do something about the accessibility issues! She's even putting them officially in the list of things to be worked on! Would I recommend this platform to the blind? Absolutely! We are finally getting a place where we belong and where we're respected! For the record, I am dandylover1@blob.cat, but as with other Fediverse platforms, there are many instances. The actual discussion can be found below, if anyone else wants to contribute either experiences or coding knowledge.

Akkoma · Minor feature requests for full screen reader accessibilityI sincerely appreciate this. As it is, Akkoma is already wonderfully accessible. It’s just these thiny things that would make it perfect.

First, they shut down the Basic HTML site, forcing many of us to switch to clients such as Thunderbird. Now, they're using qr codes which are not only inaccessible to the blind but also to those who don't use smartphones! This is ridiculous! Yes, they do still have the option to click whether it's you trying to sign in or not (which still requires a smartphone and a carrier, which they claim to be concerned about), but how long before they remove that, too?

By the way, let me praise Raccoon, an Android app for Friendica and Mastodon, for being forward thinking about accessibility.

Their contributor pvagner is proficient with mobile accessibility. After I got clear on accessibility actions, I ran through Raccoon with TalkBack and then external Bluetooth keyboard, and had no trouble posting to or reading threads.

Thanks for not excluding disabled users!

For 5 years now I've been learning about web accessibility and reviewing websites. But I'm not a native screen reader user, and my mobile app experience is lacking.

This month I learned about "Accessibility Actions" or "actions available" for VoiceOver and TalkBack. I shoulda known about it for years-- it makes navigation by swiping potentially much quicker.

Would you be willing to share your thoughts and experiences with this feature?

TalkBack now has Bluetooth HID support, and the update is rolling out to all Android phones, not just the Galaxy S25. You'll need the latest firmware for your display, so wouldn't it just be that the NLS EReader, which hasn't had an update in like half a year, wouldn't work with it. But I'll test it this afternoon. If anyone gets to it first, let me know!
