“The knowledge infrastructure that used to anchor American governance is fraying,” writes @Daojoan in her story for her Index newsletter. People in senior positions often have limited understanding of their roles, responsibilities, the law and the U.S. Constitution, and it doesn’t seem to matter. “The crisis we face — not only in America but worldwide — isn't a knowledge gap. It's a moral gap. A deficit of virtue. And the only remedy for that is cultural, not political,” she writes.

Wannabe tyrants like Trump have always used a wildly exaggerated fear of the "other" to fool populations into trading their freedom for totalitarianism. The suspicion that some "other" is taking something from you or threatening you or your family motivates people to action faster than any other stimulus. Triggering a fight or flight response isn't particularly difficult, especially in a population bombarded with propaganda about supposed threats and conspiracy theories.

'Recently terminated Copyright Office Register Shira Perlmutter sued President Donald Trump and the acting Librarian of Congress on Thursday seeking an injunction blocking her removal.

Perlmutter says the Trump administration’s attempts to remove her are “blatantly unlawful” because the power to appoint and therefore remove the register of copyrights is vested in the Librarian of Congress, not the President, according to a complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. The lawsuit comes less than two weeks after the White House terminated Perlmutter on May 10, days after Trump fired her ex-boss, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden'.

Six months ago, Missouri voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that enshrined their right to abortion. Republican lawmakers have now approved a new referendum that would seek the amendment's repeal and ban most abortions, with exceptions for rape and incest. "Republican senators used a series of rare procedural moves to cut off discussion by opposing Democrats before passing the proposed abortion-rights revision by a 21-11 vote. The measure passed the Republican-led House last month," according to @AssociatedPress. Here's more.

'Late on Friday, May 9, the Texas state House of Representatives passed HB 2963, Rep. Gio Capriglione (R-Keller), which requires manufacturers of electronic devices sold to consumers to make repair materials available to consumers and independent repair shops. It’s the latest bipartisan landslide vote in favor of Right to Repair reforms, which have already passed in eight other states.' pirg.org/texas/updates/texas-s #righttorepair #uslaw #uspol

'The firing of Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter came after Perlmutter and her office earlier this week issued part three of a lengthy report about artificial intelligence and expressed some concerns and questions about the usage of copyrighted materials by AI technology.'
