Thanks ABC Radio Canberra for having us on their Sunday Brunch show this morning to talk all about @sci_burst and #scicomm 💖💃👩‍🔬

@theEllamo and I had a great time chatting with Kim Huynh! Honoured to be called a Can-Do Canberran on my live #radio debut 💪🎙️

You can listen to the interview here, starting at about 34:52 minutes left: abc.net.au/listen/programs/can

Happy birthday to #entomologist Margaret Fountaine (1862-1940), here in my #linocut with many #butterflies from her collection.

Her posthumous books featured her “wild and fearless life,” but she was also a trailblazing famous #Victorian #lepidopterist, published in The Entomologist’s Record and Journal of Variations, expert on tropical butterflies, discovering, documenting, breeding & gathering specimens 🧵

#WomeninSTEM I mentored two high school girls last year in a research internship. Yesterday I was at the symposium for the end of this year's program, and when I saw them they came running up to hug me and let me know one is going to major in neuroscience this fall, and the other in biomedical engineering! Yay!!!

So excited for them!! 😁🥳 #science #neuroscience

I had the final mentoring session of my #WomenInSTEM program today. I talked about Women in Science with my mentee, and it was a bit depressing that apparently in 15 years since I left school, nothing has changed. Only 6 out of 26 people in the advanced physics class are girls. All those girls are the super clever and confident ones. The others didn't think they could do it, while the boys just shrug and elect physics without further thought.
Tell your daughters/students they can do things!!!

Happy birthday to Danish #seismologist Inge Lehmann (1888 – 1993) who demonstrated that the Earth’s core is not a single molten sphere, but contained an inner solid core, in ‘36. She was a pioneer #womanInScience, a brilliant seismologist & lived to be 105.

As she first postulated, the #earth has roughly 3 equal concentric sections: mantle, liquid outer core & solid inner core. The crust, on which we live is merely 🧵1/n

Happy birthday to x-ray crystallographer Dorothy Mary Crowfoot Hodgkin (née Crowfoot, 1910-1994), Nobel laureate in #chemistry for her models of biomolecules like penicillin, vitamin B12 & insulin.

She was “captured for life by chemistry and crystals," in childhood, 1 of 2 girls allowed to study chemistry rather than domestic science at her school with a small lab in her attic. On her 16th birthday her mother gave her W.H. Bragg's 🧵1/n

"I used to say the evening that I developed the first x-ray photograph I took of insulin in 1935 was the most exciting moment of my life. But the Saturday afternoon in late July 1969, when we realized that the insulin electron density map was interpretable, runs that moment very close."
'X Rays and the Structure of Insulin', British Medical Journal, 1971

Happy Birthday Dorothy Hodgkin!

Happy birthday to founder of modern nursing, social reformer, statistician, data visualization innovator and writer Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)!
Nightingale earned the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” during the Crimean War, from a phrase used by The Times, describing her as a “ministering angel” making her solitary rounds of the hospital at night with “a little lamp in her hand”. 🧵

Happy birthday to #mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017)! The Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious #math awards, is awarded to mathematicians < 40. In 2014, she became 1st woman to win. Her research included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, & symplectic geometry, and Fields committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces”.
