Predicting rapid adaptation in time from adaptation in space: A 30-year field experiment in marine snails science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

"The #snails were reintroduced after a toxic #AlgalBloom wiped them out from the skerry. While the researchers intentionally brought in a distinct population of the same species, these evolved to strikingly resemble the population lost over 30 years prior."

#GreatLake In #NorthAmerica Turns A Green Due To Toxic #Algae
#Landsat9 snapped images of #algalbloom in #LakeErie on August 13, revealing it covered approximately 830km (320 square miles) of water within its western basin, according to #NASA #EarthObservatory. It continued to grow to this season’s likely largest extent of 1,700 square km (660 square miles) on August 22. Lake Erie regularly experiences algal blooms, primarily because of nutrient runoff from #MaumeeRiver.

What’s Killing #Endangered #Sawfish in #Florida?
Off #FloridaKeys fish — jacks, snook — swim in spirals or upside down in shallow waters of #Atlantic and #GulfofMexico. So were #stingrays and the occasional #shark. Then, endangered sawfish started dying. Scientists are racing to figure out why but have not yet figured out what is going on. They have ruled out a few potential causes, including #redtide, toxic #algalbloom that has led to past kills.

Reports of reddish brown waters around the Bay Area have SF Baykeeper concerned about another algal bloom. Baykeeper scientists suspect an outbreak of the same algae that caused a red tide across the Bay last year, resulting in an unprecedented fish kill event.

“We have reached a critical turning point,” said Prof Phil Haygarth of Lancaster University. “We might be able to turn back but we have really got to pull ourselves together and be an awful lot smarter in the way we use #phosphorus. If we don’t, we face a calamity that we have termed ‘phosphogeddon’.”
