We spent the last week of one December in the long polar night (66 days of darkness) at Utqiaġvik (Barrow), the northernmost point of continental North America. The Iñupiaq people live here deep inside the Arctic Circle for over 4,000 years, in igloos in winters till very recently. Our story is at thevagabondcouple.blogspot.com

We spent the last week of one December in the long polar night (66 days of darkness) at Utqiaġvik (Barrow), the northernmost point of continental North America. The Iñupiaq people live here deep inside the Arctic Circle for over 4,000 years, in igloos in winters till very recently. Shrines like these are in tribute to things fundamental to their survival: jaws and pieces of skeletons of bowhead whales, shells of boats and the frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean. A local Iñupiaq gentleman presented us with whale meat to eat and a family let us explore an igloo they built, adding to an unforgettable eye-opening and life-changing experience.
