I live in San Diego area and have long been involved in water safety activism in our dangerous deserts. This is security theater. Land crossings are very low in the sector. In fact, the border wall has been very, very effective since the Obama administration and Tom Homen largely secured it. Which of course means, people come by boat. I just skimmed through the last trip's images and I've got some really good ones. They haven't closed the road yet and so far it seems the military are going to the populous areas. That is, they're going to where the media can easily get to and report, since this is all theater anyway. Anyway, here's something slightly different. Shadows cast through the flood gates where the fence crosses California Gulch. My camera shoots fascistsOne quick story. Just after dark last night, I stoked the fire at the aid camp near the end of the border wall, made dinner and sat around reading. About 8:30 p.m., I saw vehicle lights coming down the steep dirt road over in Mexico. About 10 minutes later, a young Guatemalan couple with a six month old baby showed up. As usual, I welcomed them over, explained this was a camp for immigrants and asylum seekers and was the best place to wait for Border Patrol. They had just missed the 8 PM pick up, so would have to wait until 2 AM in the morning for the next one. It's really hard to describe how wild this thing is. I've said before that I see it as a piece of public art in the service of authoritarianism. Being out here a lot, I can't help but see its performative character, its ideological purpose, its practical purpose (funneling big money into various private hands), *and* its raw aesthetic power. I'm really hoping they don't close the access road immediately. The more I get to editing these shots, the more ideas I get that will require multiple repeat trips. The big difficulty is that most of the strangeness of it comes from telephoto compression. But that means either shallow depth of field or using a tripod for long exposures at f11 or more, which isn't always possible for reasons. <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Border" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Border</a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BorderWall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BorderWall</a>

Facts: I'm far safer sleeping alone in my truck out here with migrants, human smugglers, and drug smugglers operating nearby than I would be in any major western US city. As usual, the lead truck shows up, shines a spotlight into the camp, taps the horn a couple times.
