Book<p>Headphones review<br>===<br>Px8 by Bowers &amp; Wilkins<br>===</p><p>They arrived! Much excite, many happy.</p><p>These things are hefty; over a kilo, I think. The case is chonky. It came with an array of adapters and cables, but getting the headies out of the case? You can feel the engineering. The fit and finish? Excellent.</p><p>Wearing them is a little tricky. Putting them on in a consistently comfy position is not easy, but once found, the headband and cups do a great job of distributing weight correctly.</p><p>The pairing process doesn't require the app, but to get the most from this unit, it's a good idea. App installed, it immediately asks for personal info and starts marketing Deezer and qobuz without delay. Emails, notifications, offers... I've just spent a good chunk o' change on you and you are already manipulating me to spend more? Marks off. App closed.</p><p>vlc opened, 24-bit flacs found, start playing. Dillinjazz's 2023 album "Eyes Rise" is the first trial. Why? Brilliant sound mixing, fidelity to artistic intent, and I understand how this sounds on a dozen other headies and studio speakers. It is known.</p><p>Bass, the sainted underpants of Beelzebub, way too much bass. It's not unsophisticated. Not at all. Perfectly adequate, yet it drowns out the mids. Vocals and most instruments are mushed together, making the point of flacs redundant mildly redundant.</p><p>Back into the B&amp;W app, I found the EQ. Two sliders: Bass and treble. That's It. Okay, so I start by increasing treble a touch. Then a touch more. It wasn't doing what I wanted, so down goes the bass. 1 dB, 3, 6 (the lowest). It was manageable.</p><p>-6 dB of bass, +2 dB of treble, and it is rivalling my currently-used QC45s.</p><p>Rivalling. On headies which cost almost double? This is not acceptable.</p><p>A walk around the city shows the ANC to be sensible but not excelling in any way. The pass-through feature is software-mechanical making it feel like you're listening to an echo of reality. Calls and gaming audio exists but a standard Lav mic from Røde is ten times better for less than a tenth of the cost.</p><p>These are a turd.
