We're now slightly below 1000 free VPS instances!
Within the last few weeks, coming with new locations around the world, we got more and more signups, where people can also test their setups across different geo locations @BoxyBSD.
Unfortunately, this also increases the required support which is really time consuming and only handled by @gyptazy. While everything is fully automated, support is another thing and I need a short break. Hope to open the signups quickly again.
PS: This project is completely free, not even any donation possibilities etc - just imagine a box would only cost 1$.
Another one — #phkmalloc in #FreeBSD:
“phkmalloc”, Poul-Henning Kamp (https://phk.freebsd.dk/sagas/phkmalloc/).

Did anybody gently suggested to Theo that a good part of https://www.openbsd.org/policy.html is an utter nonsense? I particularly like the explanation that a copyright license is not a contract, and mentioning the international law considerations.
technical question:
why do OS installations take ages - we're talking 30+minutes on modern hardware?
what are they doing?
naively I thought
1. just coping 1s and 0s to a disk shouldn't take that long, even 4GB of them.
2. maybe the installer is testing hardware works? surely that doesn't take 30-60 minutes.
we're talking windows, solaris, macOS, not just Linux.
BSDs seem to do (1) above.

How to install FreeBSD on providers that don't support it with mfsBSD • Stefano Marinelli
"This is a set of scripts that generates a bootable image (and/or ISO file), that creates a working minimal installation of FreeBSD (mfsBSD) or Linux (mfslinux). It is completely loaded into memory."

Learn here how NAT traversal works
This is how you access the internet using exclusively IPv6 from your gateway.
The Operating System used was Linux and of course a number of programs {wireGuard Hetzner & tunnels} were used in order to map to map IPv4 into the IPv6 space
Naturally similar ways can be use in all OpenSource Operating Systems, esp in the BSD range of operating systems
Is it just me, or am I seeing an increase in #political posts here on #bsd.network?
Maybe I've not been paying too much attention, but it seems I'm seeing more of them than usual.

The other day I found out about the coolest yet most useless program ever conjured for Linux and BSD: speyes - xeyes, but South Park-themed.
The character options (cycled through by right-clicking) are: Stan, Cartman, Kenny, and Kyle. Pictured is me running it with Kenny, cuz he's my favorite of the boys.
Technically this program is meant as a dock app for WindowMaker, but I use dwm, so this isn't quite the ideal setup for that.

I have a question for the #fedi #floss #BSD hivemind:
I have a friend who is a crusty old sysadmin frustrated with Failbook and the rest who I think would LOVE the Fediverse.
I days past I'd have recommended @fosstodon but I know they're facing capacity issues.
Can anyone recommend a good ideally UNIX (BSD, Linux?) or FLOSS oriented instance I can point him at?
He's not as much of a retrocomputing maven as I am so oldbytes isn't a good fit IMO :)
Thanks!
For those who missed last night’s updates, I’m thrilled to announce that @h3artbl33d and I will be co-presenting a talk at #EuroBSDCon: Liberating the Social Web Using #BSD.
We’ll be sharing our experiences and technical decisions along the way.
I’ll be focusing on the BSD Cafe - its services, the story behind it, and most importantly, the human and motivational factors that make this community so special.
Always remember: #OwnYourData !
Stay tuned for more updates!
