Kenton Riley
A gentle reminder: Times aren't great, but you don't have to fight 24/7/365. Even good people occasionally need to take a breather and enjoy themselves. With that in mind, here is a recipe for one of my favorite drinks.

The Toy Tiger

Background: The Toy Tiger was a famous / infamous bar in Louisville from the 1970s through the 1990s, known for hosting punk / hardcore / metal bands, their connection with local radio station WQMF's house band Uncle Wiggly & The Caucasian Hogs, and questionable contests like homemade bikini, classic wet t-shirt, and banana-eating. After they closed, chef Edward Lee opened a restaurant in the basement of the Actor's Theater of Louisville called Milkwood. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Lee_(chef) The Toy Tiger was one of their signature drinks, honoring the memory of the "beloved" local landmark. Sadly, Milkwood itself closed in 2020 because... well... 2020.

What you will need:
4oz Rye Whiskey. I tend to use Knob Creek 7 year.
1oz Suze French aperitif. This is likely the most difficult ingredient to find, but readily available online.
1/2 oz heavy syrup. I take 2 parts turbinado sugar with 1 part water, heat it in a sauce pan until it dissolves, then cool & store it in a squirt bottle in the fridge.
2 or 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.
1 dash of orange bitters (I use Fee Bros. because they're easy to find).
1 large chunk of ice
Regular ice for mixing
A rocks glass
Strainer
Mixing glass

Put all the liquids in the mixing glass, and stir until chilled. Strain over the large chunk of ice in the rocks glass. You can garnish with a dehydrated or honey-soaked orange wheel (I get them locally from Paul's market https://www.paulsfruit.com/Contact/Location/4/St.-Matthews), but the drink is just fine without any garnish.

The drink is somewhere on the spectrum between an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan, with the rye and the herbals of the Suze giving it a unique kick. The high proof and lack of dilution (2:1 syrup) gives it a thick, silky mouthfeel.

Give it a try and let me know what you think. #toytiger #louisville #drinks #mixology
