"The Chicago Sun-Times just published a summer reading list with one major problem: most of the books don't exist. Titles like Tidewater Dreams by Isabel Allende and The Last Algorithm by Andy Weir sound plausible enough, but they're completely fictional—fabricated by AI and published without anyone catching the error. Of the fifteen books recommended in the list, a full ten of them are entirely made up."

The Present Age · The Chicago Sun-Times Published an AI-Generated Summer Reading List Full of Fake Books — And This is Just the BeginningBy Parker Molloy

Well that was so spot on and what I have been witnessing in the last 25 years…

“Astrophysicist and author Carl Sagan managed to predict a lot of the things the challenges America faces in the year 2021 all the way back in 1995 when he was writing a book published just before his death in 1996.”

MSNBC's Brian Williams shares the details.

"The most dangerous aspect of this trade-off isn’t the loss of privacy—it’s the loss of awareness that we’re losing anything at all. We’re not just losing skills and privacy; we’re losing the ability to recognize what independence feels like. The question isn’t whether convenience is worth the cost of liberty—it’s whether we’ll recognize what we’ve lost before we forget we ever had it."—Josh Stylman >

Was perusing the archive section of the New York Times for today's date for the year 1969 while enjoying my morning coffee when I stumbled across this article on insulin research. What really startles me is the “complexity” of the article. The assumption is the denisity of its contents is perfectly reasonable for the average reader in 1969 to understand. This isn't in a subsection; it's in the front section. The rest of the article is more of the same.

@lauren Part of why I went cold turkey on NPR—after decades of loyal addiction—was Trump's win, and the fact hearing his voice made me feel ill.

Another reason: NPR had become mass market & dumbed down; their stories were more background on whatever happened today than reporting of the new news. I figured 120-minutes of ATC had only 20-something minutes of real content for me. (So much of the background was stuff was stuff I remembered hearing first-hand on NPR!)

A good article about how dumbed down, education-aversive people now pose as if they are 'smarter' and cause havoc. Then politicians and media, especially right wings, export it in an attention grab and call reality 'woke'. This says so much:

"Can you name two living sports players?
Two movie stars?
Two musicians?
And now, Can you name two living scientists?
How about two mathematicians?
There’s the problem."
