#WD launches #HDD #recycling process that reclaims #rareearth elements, cuts out #China
#WesternDigital announced it has created a large-scale #harddisk drive recycling program in concert with #Microsoft and recycling-industry partners #CMR (Critical Materials Recycling) and #PedalPoint Recycling. The new process reclaims Rare Earth Oxides (REO) containing dysprosium, neodymium, and praseodymium from hard drives, along with aluminum, steel, gold, palladium, and copper.

Tom's Hardware · WD launches HDD recycling process that reclaims rare earth elements, cuts out ChinaBy Avram Piltch

"Now would be a very good time to check any hard drives you’ve purchased in the last 12 to 24 months! Recent reports from popular #German news outlet #Heise have raised increased reports of refurbished and modified SMART-reported drives being sold as brand new, leading to large concerns of widespread ex-cryptocurrency-burnt drives being sold through trusted business and domestic retailers. Some non-spinning platters

Over the years I've accumulated a few dead hard drives. Not wanting to dump them in the eco-station in any sort of usable way, I've taken to disassembling them.

And each time I've been struck by the beauty of engineering hidden away inside these tiny spinning devices.

Neat thing, the platters are almost the perfect size to make neat drink coasters :)

My employer requires (in theory) that my #harddisk be #encrypted. I'm not keen to have the whole #hdd encrypted, seems just crazy to me to encrypt the OS files, but I consider an encrypted home partition. The engineers at my workplace have failed to do that for me when setting up #debian on it, but I've kept free the would-be home partition and now I have a little time to try that.

But before that, I'd just like to have your experience about this.
