SleepyCattenUp front, for context:<ul><li>We're plural (in a median system).</li><li>We've only ever watched the English dub of the Bleach anime.</li><li>We are not a Bleach superfan or expert, and we only realised we're plural fairly recently.</li><li>We're gonna to vastly oversimplify stuff here about Bleach and plurality.</li></ul>Today we noticed some parallels between elements of the Bleach universe and plurality.In Bleach, there are souls that live in a kind of afterlife (spirit world; soul society). Some souls have a lot of spiritual energy and, when identified, train to become soul reapers.They're each given a starter sword. They keep it on themselves at all times, and gradually pour their soul into and bond with it as they train. Over time, it becomes a unique entity of their own, forged from the soul reaper's soul, and becomes their zanpakutō (soul-cutter sword).A zanpakutō's abilities and shape are entirely unique, based on the soul of their creator. They exist in a sealed state at first, but once their creator learns their name, they can communicate more and grow stronger together. But it's not enough to just know their name: a creator has to learn to get to know their spirit.Creators can learn a form of deep, calm meditation to fully communicate with their zanpakutō. In this, they enter their inner world to see their zanpakutō in their true form. They may be even forced to battle their zanpakutō in order to learn new abilities, as the zanpakutō will want to test that their creator is worthy.The connections between zanpakutō and creators become incredibly strong over time, but they begin as one directional, with the creator being unable to hear their zanpakutō trying to communicate with them. It's possible for such conversations to begin in the creator's dreams.If it's not clear, we see parallels in Bleach of zanpakutō being like a headmate, born of the host. They may start off being unheard, but eventually the host learns to communicate, and they can work together to grow stronger. They may battle sometimes too.And, just like with hosts and headmates, a zanpakutō is born from their creator and dies they die.There are further parallels too with hollows, particularly arrancar and visored. This is where the potential trauma triggers may be.A hollow is typically born from a human soul that has stayed in the human world for too long and not crossed over to the other side (the soul society). They are corrupted spirits who lose their hearts to despair or regret. It can take months or years to happen, but when it does, a hole forms where their heart was and a mask covers their face, like a form of protection from losing their heart.These are almost like headmates formed from extreme trauma and are incredibly dangerous, destructive, and full of hate. They don't live alongside co-operatively like a zanpakutō would with their creator: they forcefully take over the soul and suppress them. Cracking the mask can temporarily help them, but the mask will soon regenerate.Arrancar (ripped mask) and visored (masked army) are kind of opposites in Bleach. Arrancar are hollows who have progressed further and further in power by consuming other hollows, until they eventually took on more human forms, then removed their mask, gaining powers close to that of the strongest soul reapers.Visored were once soul reapers who, for various reasons, were made to start the hollowification process (becoming a hollow). However, they learnt to control the hollow within themselves and can draw on their power, allowing them to wear the hollow's mask temporarily and become stronger for a period of time. The hollow, however, will always seek to regain control if it ever can, and will only protect the soul it was created from if both of them were to perish.There are strong parallels here with systems with headmates who fight the host for control, battle with other headmates, or bring a system into imbalance.
