La mia generazione è cresciuta chiedendosi come la gente comune potesse tollerare un’atrocità. In un grottesco colpo di scena, la domanda è tornata a noi.La domanda continua a tormentarmi: è davvero così? Stiamo forse vivendo un Genocidio? Fuori da Israele, milioni di persone conoscono già la risposta. Ma molti di noi qui non possono, o non vogliono, dirla ad alta voce. Forse perché la verità minaccia di distruggere tutto ciò in cui credevamo su chi siamo e chi volevamo essere. Nominarla significa ammettere che il futuro richiederà una resa dei conti, non solo con i nostri leader, ma anche con noi stessi. Ma il prezzo da pagare per rifiutarsi di vedere è ancora più alto. Per gli israeliani della mia generazione, la parola “Genocidio” avrebbe dovuto rimanere un incubo proveniente da un altro pianeta. Una parola legata alle fotografie dei nostri nonni e ai fantasmi dei ghetti europei, non ai nostri quartieri. Eravamo noi a chiederci, da lontano, degli altri: come poteva la gente comune andare avanti con la propria vita mentre accadeva una cosa del genere? Come hanno potuto permettere che accadesse? Cosa avrei fatto io al loro posto? In un grottesco colpo di scena della storia, quella domanda ora torna a noi. Per quasi due anni, abbiamo sentito funzionari israeliani, politici e generali, dire ad alta voce cosa intendono fare: affamare, radere al suolo e Cancellare Gaza. “Li elimineremo”. “La renderemo inabitabile”. “Tagliamo cibo, acqua, elettricità”. Non erano solo parole altisonanti; erano il Piano. E poi, l’esercito israeliano lo ha messo in atto. Secondo la definizione dei manuali, questo è Genocidio: il deliberato attacco a una popolazione non per ciò che è come individuo, ma perché appartiene a un gruppo, un attacco progettato per distruggere il gruppo stesso. Ci raccontavamo altre storie per sopravvivere all’orrore, storie che tenevano a bada il senso di colpa e il dolore. Ci convincevamo che ogni bambino a Gaza fosse Hamas, ogni appartamento un covo terroristico. Diventavamo, senza accorgercene, quelle “persone comuni” che continuano a vivere la loro vita mentre “tutto” accade. Ricordo ancora la prima volta che la realtà si è spalancata davanti a me. Due mesi dopo quella che ancora chiamavo una “guerra”, tre dei miei colleghi di B’Tselem, attivisti palestinesi per i diritti umani con cui avevamo lavorato per anni, erano rimasti intrappolati a Gaza con le loro famiglie. Mi raccontavano di parenti sepolti sotto le macerie, di non essere in grado di proteggere i propri figli, della paura paralizzante. Negli sforzi frenetici per tirarli fuori da Gaza, ho imparato qualcosa che mi è rimasto impresso nella mente: in quel momento, un palestinese vivo a Gaza poteva essere “riscattato” per circa 20.000 Shekel (5.000 euro). I bambini costavano meno. La vita valutata in contanti, pro capite. Non si trattava di statistiche astratte; si trattava di persone che conoscevo. Ed è stato allora che ho capito: le regole erano cambiate. Da allora, il surreale è diventato normale. Città ridotte in cenere. Interi quartieri rasi al suolo. Famiglie sfollate, poi di nuovo sfollate. Decine di migliaia di persone uccise. Fame di Massa pianificata, con camion di aiuti respinti o bombardati. Genitori che danno da mangiare foraggio ai figli, alcuni dei quali muoiono aspettando la farina. Altri vengono fucilati, civili disarmati, uccisi a colpi d’arma da fuoco per essersi avvicinati ai convogli di cibo. Il Genocidio non avviene senza la Partecipazione di Massa: una popolazione che lo sostiene, lo consente o distoglie lo sguardo. Questo fa parte della sua tragedia. Quasi nessuna nazione che ha commesso un Genocidio ha capito, in tempo reale, cosa stava facendo. La storia è sempre la stessa: autodifesa, inevitabilità, i bersagli se l’erano cercata da soli. In Israele, la narrazione prevalente insiste sul fatto che tutto sia iniziato il 7 Ottobre, un trauma nazionale concentrato che ha suscitato, in molti israeliani, un profondo senso di minaccia esistenziale. Ma il 7 Ottobre, pur essendo un catalizzatore, non è stato sufficiente da solo. Il Genocidio richiede condizioni: decenni di Apartheid e Occupazione, di separazione e Disumanizzazione, di politiche progettate per recidere la nostra capacità di empatia. Gaza, isolata dal mondo, è diventata l’apice di questa architettura. La sua gente è diventata astrazione, ostaggi perpetui nella nostra immaginazione, soggetti da bombardare ogni pochi anni, da uccidere a centinaia o migliaia, senza alcuna responsabilità. Sapevamo che più di 2 milioni di persone vivevano sotto assedio. Sapevamo di Hamas. Sapevamo dei tunnel. Col senno di poi, sapevamo tutto. Eppure, in qualche modo, eravamo incapaci di comprendere che alcuni di loro avrebbero potuto trovare un modo per evadere. Quello che è successo il 7 Ottobre non è stato solo un fallimento militare. È stato un crollo del nostro immaginario sociale: l’illusione di poter racchiudere tutta la violenza e la disperazione dietro una recinzione e vivere in pace dalla nostra parte. Questa rottura è avvenuta sotto il governo di estrema destra più radicale della storia di Israele, una coalizione i cui ministri fantasticano apertamente sulla Cancellazione di Gaza. E così, nell’ottobre 2023, tutte le stelle del nostro incubo più oscuro si sono allineate. Questa settimana, B’Tselem ha pubblicato un rapporto, “Il Nostro Genocidio”, redatto congiuntamente da ricercatori palestinesi ed ebrei-israeliani. È diviso in due parti. La prima documenta come viene perpetrato questo Genocidio: Uccisioni di Massa, distruzione delle condizioni di vita, collasso sociale e Fame orchestrata, il tutto alimentato dall’incitamento dei dirigenti israeliani e amplificato dai media. La seconda parte del rapporto ripercorre il percorso che ha portato a questo: decenni di disuguaglianza sistemica, governo militare e politiche di separazione che hanno normalizzato l’immobilismo palestinese. Per affrontare il genocidio, dobbiamo prima comprenderlo. E per farlo, noi, ebrei-israeliani e palestinesi, abbiamo dovuto guardare la realtà insieme, attraverso la prospettiva degli esseri umani che vivono su questa terra. Il nostro obbligo morale e umano è quello di amplificare le voci delle vittime. La nostra responsabilità politica e storica è anche quella di rivolgere lo sguardo ai colpevoli e di testimoniare, in tempo reale, come una società si trasforma in una società capace di commettere un Genocidio. Riconoscere questa verità non è facile. Anche per noi, persone che abbiamo trascorso anni a documentare la violenza di stato contro i palestinesi, la mente resiste. Rifiuta i fatti come veleno, cerca di sputarli fuori. Ma il veleno è qui. Inonda i corpi di coloro che vivono tra il fiume e il mare, palestinesi e israeliani allo stesso modo, di paura e di una perdita insondabile. Lo Stato israeliano sta commettendo un Genocidio. E una volta accettato questo, la domanda che ci siamo posti per tutta la vita si ripresenta con urgenza: cosa avrei fatto io, allora, su quell’altro pianeta? Ma la risposta non è retorica. È ora. Siamo noi. We call on people of conscience around the world to boycott ZARA, the flagship brand of the Spanish multinational Inditex, for its deep and growing complicity in Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid, and genocide.ZARA’s complicity with Israel’s regime of oppression runs deep:<ul><li>At the start of 2025, amid Israel’s ongoing genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza, ZARA opened its largest-ever store near Tel Aviv- a 4,500 m² flagship in the Big Fashion Glilot complex, deepening Zara’s economic ties with apartheid Israel, where the brand already operates dozens of stores.</li><li>In October 2022, ZARA’s Israeli franchisee hosted a campaign event for the fascist and genocidal Israeli minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who praised the brand.</li><li>In June 2021, ZARA’s then-head designer made racist comments against Palestinians online, but the company issued only a vague statement without any real consequences.</li><li>In December 2023, ZARA ran an ad campaign titled “The Jacket,” depicting mannequins wrapped in white shrouds next to crumbled statues. Sparking backlash by the public, who saw it as a direct allusion to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the brand removed it and issued a noncommittal apology without addressing its ties to
