To get the bees ( bumblebee and native solitary ones) excited in Spring we have planted crabapple trees that blossom a little earlier that the cider apple trees. The crab apples hang on later in the autumn and look beautiful in the sun.#apples #crabapples #cider #orchard #bees

An air layering attempt on the old Santa Rosa plum. Harvested the sphagnum moss from the rock seen in the background. Now we wait.

Yes, I could just buy another Santa Rosa plum but then it's not THIS plum. This also ignores the fact that the chances of getting the same plum is near zero because "looks like" is more important than "actually is" in the buy a plant world these days.

What created this was freshly harvested sphagnum moss mixed with some dirt that came along with it and a little dirt and wood ash, then soaked in water. This was secured around the de-barked limb with some narrow plastic wrap and then it was covered with some wide plastic wrap to make 3 layers. The top and bottom was sealed with some splicing tape. The whole thing wrapped tight with narrow wrap, then more splicing tape on the ends. The goal is to retain the moisture of the sphagnum moss for a couple of months if it takes that long.

This deep blue sky has a wonderful colour but is a sign that the night will be frosty with minus degrees. After more than +20°C, we had a sudden temperature drop last evening. Today only 9°C with a strong and icy NE wind.
I love that time when the edges of the forests and the orchards explose in green, white and rose. The green of April is the most beautiful one!

A vast meadow, still mostly green, with view into the distance and of a flawless blue sky from a meadow. To the left, roughly in the middle ground and in the distance on a flat hill, the edges of the forest begin to green and blossom: bird cherries, blackthorns, wild plums. This is also where it first turns lush green. But a very light veil of green can already be seen on the tops of the forest in the distance.

One of my favourite times of the year: when the trees start to turn green and everything is in bloom at the edge of the forest and in the Streuobst-Wiesen.

The Comice pear, the oldest Gravenstein apple, an early blooming peach grown from seed, and the Harcot Apricot. I saw quite a few apricots blooming when I was out and about today. The Japanese type plum here is a couple of warm days away from starting to bloom and it doesn't look like it's died much more. It's more than 50 years old.

Apricot, apple, pear, and red currant buds.

The Seckel Pear tree is a couple of days away from blooming. (First blossoms last year were very early — March 31.)

The young leaves are just exiting the phase described by #RobertFrost:

At TeePee Cider we have done a deal with nature. Beau Vista orchard is organic and we encourage the wildlife. In return they provide comfort and security for the apples. This is what I found as I scaled the apple picking ladder on a large Bramley tree. #apples #cider #orchard #harvest

Yarlington Mill apple trees before and after harvest at Beau Vista orchard. A lovely cider apple with soft tannins. Makes a lovely single variety (SV) cider. The apple originated as a wilding or gribble from the mill race at the village of Yarlington in Somerset England.
