DEAR #IP #PATENT LAWYERS,
am still watching pre-code movies, particularly movies around 1928 the year Jazz Man came out and talkies became a thing.

one thing i’ve noticed are the big PATENT NOTICES at the beginning of talkies. that has made me wonder: i have not noticed patent notices at the beginning of silent movies.

so i ask: is this why there were a fuckton of independent silent film makers? did sound film #patents help concentrate power into the Hollywood studios monopsony?

t.coMedtronic, Recor commence hostilities over RDN patentsBy Mark McCarty

I don't remember where I read this (some time ago), but I liked the suggestion.

Instead of answering Trumps tariffs with another set of tariffs and thereby hurting their own population and economy, Europe (and the rest of the world) could answer by lifting the jurisdiction of US-patents. Patents only work when the local authorities actually uphold them.

Especially in the case of software. Imagine how BigTech would react if they loose revenue.

Does this make sense?

The tl;dr: As stated in the host's predictions section of the video, over the air (OTA) TV in the US will cease to exist and the spectrum sold off to the highest bidder. A completely avoidable situation, but #DRM and #patents will end up killing something that Americans have taken for granted since the 1950s. #NextGenTV youtu.be/sQVb62Cn_t8

@landley @burnoutqueen Yeah...

#GPLv3 is a desaster as it's 99% ideology and 1% license text and alongside #AGPLv3 completely ignores the reality of how #licensing and #patents and #IP works.

  • Not that I like the status-quo, but we'd rather see businesses steer clear of anything GPLv2+ or GPLv3 or worse.

And on the flipside we basically get "source available" stuff like #SSPL which only serves as a means to commit #AssetDenial and monopolize commercial offerings...

Update. New study: "#NIH investment in drugs approved from 2010 to 2019 was not less than investment by the #pharmaceutical industry, with comparable accounting for basic and applied research, failed clinical trials, and cost of capital or discount rates."

PS: Relevant to (1) #Trump admin cutbacks to NIH #funding and (2) industry #patents and licensing terms on approved drugs.

"The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) just made a move that will protect bad patents at the expense of everyone else. In a memo released February 28, the USPTO further restricted access to inter partes review, or IPR—the process Congress created to let the public challenge invalid patents without having to wage million-dollar court battles.

If left unchecked, this decision will shield bad patents from scrutiny, embolden patent trolls, and make it even easier for hedge funds and large corporations to weaponize weak patents against small businesses and developers."

I hope countries around the world feel emboldened to repeal all the intellectual property laws that they adopted in return for favorable terms of trade with the US. None of it matters any more. It should be apparent now that US tariffs are getting applied RANDOMLY, to countries EVEN WHEN THEY COMPLY WITH ALL TRADE DEALS. I hope they do themselves a favor and free their societies from the shackles of US economic imperialism and innovate in a way that US companies cannot.

Why India’s IT Sector Is Stumbling?

Hey there! So, imagine this scenario: you’re sipping your coffee. You’re scrolling through your phone, and you see a headline. It’s about India’s IT giants—like TCS, Wipro, and Infosys—hitting a rough patch. You’ve probably heard how India’s been this massive tech hub for years, right? Coding, outsourcing, all that jazz. But lately, things aren’t looking so shiny. I’ve been digging into this, and honestly, it’s a mix of global chaos, some stiff competition, […]
