Meet Charlie the Common Tern, not your everyday Tern, but one of several denizens of the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside NY that lay claim to MNSA Director Michael Farina. A different "kettle of fish" (to use a Common Tern expression) from the Terns nesting in various colonies on LI, where they would rather dive bomb your head than land on it. And, when you visit, tell 'em Charlie sent you!

Weird, strange & beautiful

The snowy albatross (Diomedea exulans), also known as the wandering albatross, white-winged albatross, or goonie, is a large seabird, have the largest wingspan of any living bird. They spend the majority of their lives at sea, only returning to land to breed every two years, they can also fly thousands of miles in search of food. They are also skilled nocturnal hunters able to catch prey in darkness which is unusual for seabirds. Have salt glands above their nasal passages that help them desalinate the ocean water they ingest.

The sun was low when we left Hafnarholmi harbour, where the puffin colony in East Iceland is located, last month. If you zoomed in, you'd be able to see some dots that are mostly puffins floating on the water, and also a few mid-air. It was a great visit.
