I’ve been concentrating quite a bit on British cars lately, so I thought I’d go French for a few days for a bit of variety. Meet the Simca 1100 pick-up - although this example, as one of the last mid-eighties examples, was badged as a Talbot. With the 1100 hatch, Simca basically invented the Golf years before Volkswagen did - but the pick-up has a big claim to fame as well. More tomorrow! Pic taken at the recent NEC Practical Classics resto show.

Yesterday @lionelb raised the question of the similarity of the Renault 8 to the Simca 1000. Both follow the same rear-engined formula, and are in the same size bracket but the main influence on the Simca’s design came from collaboration with Fiat, the French company’s main shareholder at the time the 1000 was introduced in 1961. I saw this late example - the 1000 survived until 1978 - at #RetroClassics Stuttgart in 2016.

Factoid Extra: Chrysler UK’s ‘ ‘78 Show’ revealed the problems facing their 600-odd dealers at the time - a collection of mainly ageing cars & just one ‘modern’ one (in the guise of the Alpine)…

And some were particularly vintage with several from the 1960s: the Simca 1000 originally dated from 1961, the Hillman Hunter from 1966 & the Simca 1100 from 1967 (though its layout was still contemporary).

Still, plenty of room for a discount if popped along…

Factoid Extra: Yes, the engine made a characteristic rattle (so that’s dealt with), but the Chrysler Alpine really was the future British family car though it would take Vauxhall & Ford to prove it years later…
Btw, in Europe, the Simca 1307/8 had a far better reception including being the 2nd best selling imported in West Germany for 1976 & outselling the R5 (though the perennial German champ of the R4 was in its usual 1st place)…

While the rebranding of #Chrysler Europe as Talbot did not succeed, the choice of name itself was quite clever as it had previously been used by both the British (formerly #Rootes) and French (formerly #Simca) sides of the operation. Automotive genealogy can be complicated. One snag - did this old, if illustrious, brand really resonate with buyers? Here’s a British Sunbeam Talbot Alpine convertible from 1955. We’ve done #FOTU namesakes with the #SEAT and #Triumph Toledos but today’s car is the first of a pair that may be sisters, cousins or simply just lookalikes - nobody seems to be sure. The Anglo-French #ChryslerAlpine, badged outside the UK as the Simca 1307/1308, was mostly well received when it appeared in 1976. The body was designed by the UK side of Chrysler Europe but mechanically, this car was an evolution of the #Simca 1100. #FestivalOfTheUnexceptional  #WeirdCarMastodon #davidsdailycar
