Mason Pines<p>On my spare <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Thinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Thinkpad</span></a> P52s laptop, I've installed <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a>, using the alpha installer.</p><p>I've tested the advanced installer because I wanted to check if the systemd-boot loader works during installation, which it does.</p><p>I'm staying with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> because I tried both <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> and <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/GNOME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GNOME</span></a>, and both have issues for me, with the former being a little unstable in its current transition state.</p><p>But all things considered, <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a> is looking to be a solid release. In <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a>, it's been as rock solid in use as my <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookworm</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> installation on my main desktop.</p><p>The only small niggle I'm currently checking is that the external 4K monitor sometimes doesn't correctly set after login on power up with the laptop lid closed. It is set as Primary display, without mirrored displays, so each can have unique settings and resolution.</p><p>I'll keep doing twice-weekly updates on <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Trixie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trixie</span></a> and see how things go. Any bugs, I'll check if already logged or otherwise log new ones. But so far, as I say, I've had none.</p>

Mason Pines<p>I'm about to move to a laptop rather than my desktop, in the runup to a house move.</p><p>Today, I run <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> (<a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/bookworm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookworm</span></a>) and the <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a> desktop. That is all fine and dandy and fits my needs.</p><p>The question is whether to try something new. Be that underlying <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/distro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>distro</span></a> or desktop.</p><p>I have tried many times to move away from <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a>. But the stability of stable is difficult to argue with. I have also tried many different desktops. Be that </p><p>Gnome, KDE, or Cinnamon.<br>All of these exhibit problem areas, for me at least.</p><p>With Gnome, the Files application is so limited that I end up installing <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/thunar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thunar</span></a> from <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a>. Plus, I have to add a handful of extensions to make things more readily useful to me.</p><p>With Cinnamon, it's largely okay except for the file browser again. Too slow.</p><p>KDE looks pretty, and some of the applets are cool. But stability suffers.</p><p>Should I stay with the tried and tested, or is there something out there that has all the features and stability of <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Stable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stable</span></a> with <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/XFCE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XFCE</span></a>.</p>

Denzil Ferreira :fedora:<p>Folks with AMD RX 9070 and Linux: enable overdrive by adding this to your kernel arguments: amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff. Reboot so that the next steps are available.</p><p>Install CoreCtrl and in the System &gt; Software tab, make sure you are on Mesa 25.1.0 and kernel 6.13.5+. In the Profiles tab, change Performance mode to Advanced, change the Power profile to 3D Fullscreen. Set voltage offset to -10mV and reduce the maximum memory MHz by 100MHz (yes, do it).</p><p>With the lower voltage, the GPU core clock will get closer to XT levels, and reducing the memory clock a tiny bit will make it stable. There is a really lovely property of properly maintained stable distribution. The only changes made are to make it more stable and more secure, e.g. targeted bug fixes only.
