@Richard_Littler Oh no, that a PhD project in estimating the tree canopy coverage of Tudor London
@SRDas This is one of the more extreme examples of this utility company pruning that I've seen.
They should be forced to put the lines underground, dammit. #UrbanForest
A man chopped down Los Angeles trees. The crime cut deep in the struggling neighborhood
Some very welcome good news!
I've seen enough amazing results in smaller trials that proved difficult to scale up that I'm holding on to some caution, but this is so promising - not just for Boorloo/Perth but also for other places that are struggling to manage PSHB.
I'm massively behind in all my podcast listening (changes Apple made some years ago to their podcast app contributed to this), so I missed that Alie Ward gave a shoutout to my Carobology episode during the Domestic Phytology episode!

Carobs allowed to grow to their mature height provide great year 'round shade.

* transition all council buildings away from gas and support residents to get off gas,
* plant and maintain twenty marri trees in Harold Rossiter park,
* install shaded bus shelters to replace ones that were previously removed, and
* facilitate the creation of digital petitions for the Town.
Hopefully you're inspired for next year's meeting!
Some really interesting details in here about tree failure patterns following Hurricane Helene, despite mixing up some details about hardwoods vs softwoods

Dead trees walking?
All of these ghost-like trees are scheduled to be removed on 12th Street and 59th Ave. SE in Calgary. I counted 32 trees.
There is no reason given or project number on the City of Calgary signs.
Suffice it to say, there are dangers to being around large trees, but I personally would not want to live in a city or suburb that doesn't have large trees.
What needs to happen is what used to happen - we used to have robust public horticulture that cared for the trees and maintained them. It wasn't just outsourced to chainsaw jockeys. If knowledgeable people in sufficient numbers and with sufficient resources care for public trees = lower risk.
There is a complex web of issues here and while I've seen the occasional article talking about things right after a windstorm, I haven't yet seen a newspaper or journal article that really takes on the complex web of issues in street/public tree policy in the US.
Maybe the arborists are more aware of what's out there.
When I started studying carob, I studied street trees in my region that had been planted as far back as the 1920s. I walked a lot of streets & saw a lot of street trees, not just carob.
And I started to learn about how political choices over decades had affected how street trees are chosen and maintained and who does that maintaining.

Threats to Urban Forests in the US.
There is a downloadable tool linked in the PDF. At least for me, it opened as an Excel worksheet in my browser, but with some errors so I'm not sure if it was intended to be Excel.

"San Diego’s urban forest, 2017"

Heading out to the launch this morning of "Stewarding Canopy and Community in Central Queens" , a $5M federal program led by NYC Parks, Trees New York, and Partnerships for Parks.
They will plant 2,000 trees in Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Corona, while also focusing on tree maintenance, community outreach, education, and paid training and job opportunities for youth and adults.
I tried another browser and got it to load.
Turns out it's Ficus microcarpa. I didn't recognize it because it looks like it's been pruned to hell. Although it might also look like that because the bushier outer parts have been torn off.
While beautiful, Ficus microcarpa is a terrible choice for dense cities. I'm in favor of keeping the ones that are in Pasadena, LA alive for as long as it's possible, but definitely wouldn't recommend planting any more. #UrbanForest #SanFrancisco
