The iPad won't be a Mac and it's really time people figure this out. (They should have realized in 2018, 2020, and 2022 but who's counting)

There's some obvious stuff that iPadOS needs to be doing that it isn't. But it will never be a Mac. Just buy a Mac.

The iPad Pro is still the perfect computer for me.

That said, I do expect iPadOS 18 to provide some surprises. But don't lean on WWDC to be some kind of come to Jesus moment.

I'm not sure the people that are dissatisfied will ever be happy with the product unless it literally ran macOS. What I never see discussed online is how far the iPad Pro has come since it debuted in 2015.

Is it slow moving? Sure. But Apple keeps shaving off the rough edges with each update, hardware and software. The remaining niche use cases you can't perform on iPad will eventually be addressed.

@HilliTech Exactly. It has come a LONG way. We're really close too. In my opinion the iPad just need to be a bit better at running things in the background. You should be able to leave FCP exporting a video without it quitting on you, for example. Then it also needs to be able to play multiple audio sources at once, like the Mac. Finally, as pointed by many here, iPadOS APIs need to be created for developers so they can offer a great Stage Manager experience. That's it!

@HilliTech I agree. And I actually think the iPad Pro would be worse if it could run macOS. There are a lot of legacy kludges that carry on in macOS that are just fine running on a Mac or MacBook. People who want to run macOS on a thin and light device should be up in arms with demands that Apple add cellular connections as an option for the Mac and MacBook.

@HilliTech What people also miss is that the Mac and iPad are designed to work *together*. It’s not an “or”, it’s an “and”.

@HilliTech From all the hot-takes today, I want to shout this from the rooftops. I have both (MacBook Air and iPad mini) and iPadOS is certainly clunkier for a lot of things, but for the things it's good at, it's way more pleasant and convenient. I also find myself grabbing the iPad 95% of the time I'm not using my phone.

@HilliTech @WarnerCrocker

I am not interested in an iPad for its ‘Mac’ like qualities, but for its iPad like qualities.

@HilliTech I don’t want the iPad to be a Mac, I want the Mac to gain some of iPads touch capabilities. Apple needs to make a hybrid touchscreen MacBook… rumour is they might be doing just that, but we may have to wait until 2026 (if they ever release it).

That said I think Apple is short changing iPad Pro users by continuing to ship a substantially limited operating system on expensive Pro hardware. I haven’t really used my 2018 iPad Pro since 2020 and I won’t be upgrading it.

@HilliTech For daily browsing activity nothing beats the iPad. For daily productivity nothing beats my MBP although I have been bitching about the high prices for decades. (Apple IIe first Apple prod). However I’m a gamer and nothing beats my PC for that and because it’s the most economic and powerful (I own) via its graphic card, and huge monitor, and also use it for toying with Unreal Engine. Due to the reality and flow of game dev, Macs are just not that game friendly . 🤔
