If it becomes mainstream then sure it should become configurable.
My only doubts about it is that there's much less value in any search if there's a non deterministic indexing of content.

So, how do you think should people opt-in for searching? I might just write my own solution to this in the form of a #relay or a service to #apps, which would enhance their search functionality.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask. My prejudice is that if it's public it should be searchable, in the context it was published at least.
