“I’m a Google Cloud software engineer, and I refuse to build technology that powers genocide [and] apartheid”

Watch the others in the room. The assholes who jeer and manhandle the protestors. These are your peers in the tech industry. These are the “acceptable folks” in tech. Fuck these people.

Look at their faces. They know exactly what they’re complict in. Look at their smug smiles. Dickheads each one.

Warlock Of Wires

@aral unfortunately this is not the status quo for software engineers I wish far more of them would take their jobs as serious as these two do about the responsibilities they have when it comes to that title..

As a electrical engineer I refuse to make weapons that harm people I didn't spend eight years in college to kill someone. I'd rather save lives and preserve people's rights...

@Warlockofwires@techhub.social @aral@mastodon.ar.al

A lot of people have to – or at least feel they do –choose between principles and feeding and housing themselves (moreso if they're not single).

@ferricoxide @aral

When you become a doctor or an engineer you're supposed to take that oath seriously if you don't want to.

don't assume the title.

if we're going to allow one job the privilege of making that excuse then why should we not extend that privilege to all jobs...

I was just following orders when it *hurts someone* never works for war crimes and it shouldn't work for business/work crimes..

On one level there is mucking up someone's McDonald's order which is a minor inconvenience..
on another level you are creating entire systems that wreck tens of thousands of people's livelihoods

The latter is this..

With great power comes great responsibility...

@ferricoxide @aral a good example pushing a sketchy update to Windows that causes 40,000 people to lose their documents folder and their contents is a massive failure in my book...

Forcing people off their operating systems they are used to and on to a new one that doesn't look the same causing Mass confusion to people who have dementia and other disabilities where this kind of stuff creates chaos.

Look up the GWX debacle...

This was not done automatically somebody who had software skills decided collude with management to agree to do this...

And DO harm!

I worked for 2 years late last decade as an A plus certified technician for frys between engineering jobs. And I saw the Damage Done to the common person by ruthless changes to their computers and the chaos it caused.

I saw HARM done. And it has stuck with me...
