We managed to crack Hisense A9 bootloader lock, and root over at XDA brainpower. Good old times of compiling AOSP and porting CyanogenMod (nowadays LineageOS).

Rumor has it that Hisense is downsizing the team behind these... it's a shame! Now debloated from Chinese specific apps and running Google Services.

We could also now port @postmarketOS 🤩. Would be interesting to see Gnome Mobile on eink!

Sounds like a weekend project 😁

@denzilferreira @postmarketOS This is incredibly amazing work, good job!

And it makes me exceptionally happy as well, as I bought it, knowing well.. the disadvantages, but... This work? This is just.. makes me simply happy.

Thank you.

@denzilferreira @postmarketOS omg! BIG congrats! I want! Will (or s it already and i overlooked) there be a thread at xda-forums?

@denzilferreira @postmarketOS That would be really really cool to get running! the Hisense is high on my "got to get" list, but a clean OS is a required prerequisite indeed :)

@denzilferreira Literally just bought a Hisense A9 on eBay last night, I was mildly bummed that it would probably never be rooted and then I stumble across this post this morning and it made my day. Thanks for working on this!

@denzilferreira @postmarketOS

I would love to use something like that on the phone. As long as the e-ink control centre can be ported (setting the display mode Clear-Balanced-Smooth-Speed).

Might be better with something Android based, though, for reading software. I don't know what's available for Linux, especially for e-ink? Maybe Koreader would work?

@mutkitta @postmarketOS could try Waydroid to run Android apps on the device. But one step at the time. For now, does not boot.
