@gnomon Well it's not all well and done having him banished from my instance.
First, I don't think the thread should be erased (I might have to due to gdpr, tho it is questionable if it applies in Canada) so we can learn from it. Ironically there is no fulltext search on Mastodon, so the next wanting to do the same can't easily find the DO NOT DO THIS threads that exists.
Second, it's almost guaranteed that in a couple of days that tool or one similar will pop-up in a jurisdiction that doesn't care about privacy and what then?
I think we need to be proactive on this. Since action speaks louder than words, after the holidays I will look at the Mastodon issues and repo to see if I can help. That being said I am no expert on security, but I am really motivated in finding a solution to this kind of abuse without breaking the federation. Otherwise we are just doomed to see this happen again and again.

@nicdex @gnomon is there any way to know if others are doing the same but not saying it out loud? Because they have a fair point. If not them, someone will do it or is already doing it. Can’t these guys help instead of exploiting the problem? Anyone asked them?
