I ran into a few issues with Windows 2.x and later versions of MS-DOS, so I figured I should simply install an older version of MS-DOS. Version 3.31 seemed appropriate, because it supports harddisks larger than 32MB.
Easier said than done, because - as a surprise to me - this version of DOS apparently didn't even have a setup program. You have to do everything yourself: FDISK, FORMAT, SYS,... you even have to copy COMMAND.COM from A: to C: by hand. Simpler times!
@dfx Lol, most of the DOS installations I ever did were done that way. I just copied the DOS folder from one system to another (I think I used Pk-Zip to split across disks) and did the sys thing manually. I am surprised that version doesn't copy command.com when doing sys though! Setup didn't really do anything meaningful like writing any system-specific configuration or anything anyway.

@dec_hl For 86Box, I honestly avoided MS-DOS 4.x because it is said to be problematic and buggy.
@dfx I just wanted to try it because I got 3 complete sets with docs, box and all

@dec_hl I do collect old floppies and operating systems. So. ... maybe. I just don't have any real xp with MS-DOS before 5.0. What kind of spares do you have lying around?
@dec_hl Das wär jetzt an kein Problem, dass das ne deutsche Version ist. Hätte grundsätzlich schon Interesse, allein die Disketten per KryoFlux auszulesen und für die Allgemeinheit auf Archive.org zu stellen. Was würdest du denn für so ne Box wollen? 
@dfx Porto reicht mir (es sei denn du hast ne kleinigkeit zum tausch die du eh loswerden willst), ich hab 3 davon.
Noch guenstiger wird es wenn wir es beide zum VCFe schaffen 
disk-images habe ich schon rumfliegen, falls ich ne box erwische, wo nicht alles lesbar ist (normale images, nicht flux-level).
zur not kann ich auch versuchen meine 5.25" floppy an das greaseweazle zu stecken...
@dec_hl Ahhh das VCFe is ja sogar in München. Ich sitz hier in Erding, also nichtmal so weit weg. Wäre 'ne Möglichkeit, aber das wär dann ja auch erst im Mai.
Zum Tauschen hab ich eher wenig. Alles, was ich an interessanten Disketten hab, lad ich immer direkt nach Archive.org hoch. Also, wenn's für dich okay is, würd ich dir gern einmal Versandkosten rüberschicken. Wär schon cool!
