@mason @Techmeme absolute top shelf article. The average person does not give a fuck about decentralization. Honestly, I like masto and I still feel like I am missing stuff from people I used to follow on Twitter. This is a place for nerds and weirdos, it's not really great for general populace, and that's ok. It has to be.
@theinstantwin @mason @Techmeme that's not the argument, I like ActivityPub and understand the intent. As the post states though, most people don't care about that. The barrier to entry for the average user is way to high and the fact that it is decentralized is not a selling point or bonus.
@theinstantwin @mason @Techmeme the whole problem is mentioned clearly in the article. Setting up your feed is not easy, especially if you are on a smaller instance. Finding interesting things is harder than Twitter. Understanding this is harder than Twitter. Like said in the article, if you like Twitter and are ok with the situation that is happening, then mastodon will not pull you away.
No is talking about product positioning, all we are talking about is that this is not a simple tool compared to what exists. The comparison to Linux in the article is perfect. I also love Linux, but I wouldn't dream of telling my sister to use it. Same with Mastodon and any other activityPub system.
