@mason @Techmeme absolute top shelf article. The average person does not give a fuck about decentralization. Honestly, I like masto and I still feel like I am missing stuff from people I used to follow on Twitter. This is a place for nerds and weirdos, it's not really great for general populace, and that's ok. It has to be.

@fireynis @mason @Techmeme But decentralization isn't a product positioning, it's literally what the protocol does.

*This* is the way it positions itself. And I don't think anyone can argue with this.

@theinstantwin @mason @Techmeme that's not the argument, I like ActivityPub and understand the intent. As the post states though, most people don't care about that. The barrier to entry for the average user is way to high and the fact that it is decentralized is not a selling point or bonus.

@fireynis @mason @Techmeme isn’t the barrier the same as email? You need to know a person and their instance .

The Overton window on what’s a “high” barrier moved, but it’s not hard. And this doesn’t feel different than the standard adoption curve.

@fireynis @mason @Techmeme knowing that, the home feed *is* the filled with what you want. Tech blogs looking for clicks and defining it incorrectly doesn’t mean the product (Mastodon) is positioning itself that way.

@theinstantwin @mason @Techmeme the whole problem is mentioned clearly in the article. Setting up your feed is not easy, especially if you are on a smaller instance. Finding interesting things is harder than Twitter. Understanding this is harder than Twitter. Like said in the article, if you like Twitter and are ok with the situation that is happening, then mastodon will not pull you away.

No is talking about product positioning, all we are talking about is that this is not a simple tool compared to what exists. The comparison to Linux in the article is perfect. I also love Linux, but I wouldn't dream of telling my sister to use it. Same with Mastodon and any other activityPub system.

@mason @Techmeme @fireynis It (The UI) is not simple compared to what exists. It (the UX) is far superior to what exists.

That is not at all the same situation as Linux. Both the Windows and Mac experience don’t need improvement to the average user. The Twitter algorithm and overall UX is a mess.

@mason @Techmeme @fireynis He’s wondering why Mastodon isn’t scaling faster, and I’d ask him: are you confusing ‘scale’ with ‘growth’? Scale includes maintaining product quality (in this case that’s audience and content), and Twitter hasn’t done that.
