The autistic community is vastly underemployed, and even if you are fortunate enough to find work, there be dragons.

Disclosing your disability doesn’t always end well. Instead of getting reasonable accommodations, you might get let go…for “reasons”.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic what are the best ways to be an ally, to support them

@CraigPendlebury @autism101 @actuallyautistic Something I've run into over and over: I say, "I need to communicate in writing," and I am told that writing is inefficient, and then everything is spoken anyway. Writing is absolutely *not* inefficient for me. If it's spoken, I will lose about 50% of what you say and end up having to ask you about it -- in writing -- after the conversation ends. There is no way around this. Yes, speech is faster. But so what, if it's too fast for me to process effectively?

@CraigPendlebury @autism101 @actuallyautistic In general, I wish that people would listen better and ask more questions, instead of assuming they get what I mean when they don't, or ignoring what I took valuable time to explain.

The single biggest thing that would benefit me, that no one ever seems willing to do, is if people would just take the time to understand what autism really is. To read even a little bit about it, or ask some basic questions. I spend enormous amounts of time and energy to meet non-autistic people not halfway, but where they're already standing. Do that for every person you meet, all day, every day, and see how quickly it wears you out. Even a little bit of movement towards halfway on the part of a few people I interact with regularly can have a profound impact on my energy and frustration levels.

@hosford42 @autism101 @actuallyautistic thank you so much for taking the time to state this. It will help me be better informed

@CraigPendlebury @autism101 @actuallyautistic Thanks for actually asking for input from autistic people! It's a rare thing to see.

@hosford42 @autism101 @actuallyautistic As I say, I am only interested to understand more, understand better, and be an ally.
