Today is a heavy volunteer work day again. We may, just may be able to finish the first phase of removal of the runaway wisteria infestation this morning. The area was originally a plant nursery for the City, with wisteria, honeysuckle (multiple varieties), privet, euonymus, cedars, red oak, … When the City abandoned the site, they let it go feral. The wisteria expanded to a wild area of ~5 acres(?) so dense you could not walk through there. It killed most of the trees in that block. We have reduced it by manually cutting it back to less than an acre through hard labor. Next phases would involve regular mowing, or other methods the property manager may choose.
Just for a photo, we are seeing spring-like skies lately. An iPhone photo.
@oldguy52 I didn’t know it used to be a plant nursery! Where is the wisteria? I’ve never noticed it.
We nearly have it completely cut back. The main area was along Whitetail Trail behind the Junipers, and east of Coyote Trail. It covered everything down to the flowline. All of that is clear. There is a small cluster along the eastern Marsh Trail that I need to take out this summer.
@oldguy52 Aha. I usually avoid the trails on that side (in spring & summer, anyway) ever since the year my kid & I got devoured by chiggers on the flowline. I still have scars. :-) I do usually take the Marsh Trail, though. Have the redbuds leafed out yet? It seems like Oxley is always a little ahead of my neighborhood, redbud-wise.
Repel on the shoes and socks will fix the chigger (and tick) problem. It is a banner year for both so I soak everything in Sawyers before working in the woods. The Redbuds are going strong, the plums are a little past prime, dogwoods are flowering and starting to see some of the roundleaf groundsorel. Won’t be long before all of the wildflowers are out.
