Religio Medici by Sir Thomas Browne.
Published in the 1660s it's the random musings of a doctor. At times he sounds remarkably modern, at times he sounds positively medieval. But he is never less than curious about the world around him.
I adored it.
@real_jamescain This one. It is one of the finest books I have read. It deals with guilt, regret and an ensuing moral decay - in a world that is increasingly individualized, each one busy running a meaningless race and hardly noticing those who fall behind. Hard to find a copy.

@real_jamescain _Not What You Expected_ by Joan Aiken. An anthology of short stories. Modern märchen.
