Are there any #macOS apps that let me open and browse a zip without just dumping the contents into the current folder? This behavior has irritated me for so long.
@weston I would use a Quick Look for that, e.g., haven’t tried but something like this: https://github.com/srirangav/qlZipInfo
@com Looks like it doesn't support Sequoia
@weston Oh, well, there’s many options. Just search “Quick Look zip”.
@synkr3tyk I kinda just want a replacement app so it works in finder. The only real option is the Unarchiver, but it still just unzips in place.
@weston
This person has a Mac version of 7-Zip, might be useful?
Hm. What to you mean by "browse a zip"?
You do know that QuickView at least shows the content of the zip Archive without opening it?
(this select the archive and press space)
@Ann_Effes On Windows and Linux when you double click a zip file, it opens a window and you can see the files. I can drag out a single file or click a button to extract the whole thing to a folder.
On macOS you click a zip and it dumps the files where it is and doesnt really ask. Many times all I want is a single file in an archive, but I have to fully extract first on mac.
Is it the end of the world? no, is it annoying.. yes.
I am just really surprised there aren't many alternatives for zip apps.
also quick view doesnt show the files in a zip on my MacBook using Sequoia, so it must be a setting or something? (screenshot attached)
I see.
There are about a dozens apps out there to handle zip files on a Mac, some of them may have this feature.
I would start with "BetterZip" at https://macitbetter.com
AFAIK it supports what you want.
Archiver4.app from https://incrediblebee.com
does it also.
I have no idea why QuickLook does not show the content under Sequoia, don't use it (yet). Hm. Did I install a QL extension? Can't remember.
Oh, yes, sorry:
