The hot and humid weather that arrived on Tuesday, June 18th, prompted officials to declare heat alerts as temperatures skyrocketed into the 90s across many locations. And the humidity only made it feel hotter, which caused the heat index to soar over 100 degrees in parts of the Northeast on Tuesday afternoon.

"We saw little relief from the hot temperatures on Wednesday as the heat wave continued. Temperatures across New England soared into the mid and upper 90s, with parts of the region posting higher temperatures than South Florida on Wednesday. #BostonMA set a record-high temperature of 98 degrees on Wednesday, which broke the previous record of 96 degrees. The new record high temperature recorded at #MountWashington on Wednesday also fell a few degrees short of the highest temperature ever recorded in June and the all-time station high of 72 degrees. Here are some other records that were set on Wednesday:

- Millinocket, Maine, hit 97 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- Caribou, Maine, hit 96 degrees, matching its all-time high temperature. It also posted a heat index of 103, the highest on record.
- Bangor and Houlton in Maine tied calendar-day records of 95 degrees.
- Reading, Pennsylvania, tied a calendar-day record of 95 degrees.
- Syracuse, New York, tied a calendar-day record of 95 degrees.
- Poughkeepsie, New York, hit 94 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- Cleveland tied a calendar-day record of 92 degrees.
- Buffalo tied a calendar-day record of 90 degrees.
- Elkins, West Virginia, hit 90 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- DuBois, Pennsylvania, hit 80 degrees, a calendar-day record.

"The heat would not relent on Thursday, June 20th, as heat advisories and excessive heat watches remained in effect for parts of the Northeast. Temperatures were forecast to reach a scorching 99 degrees in #ConcordNH, and 95 degrees in Boston on Thursday. The excessive heat also caused some trains in the Northeast to operate at lower speeds on Thursday, as rail temperatures exceeded 135 degrees!

"Another daily record high temperature was recorded atop Mount Washington on June 20th, with the new daily record of 65 degrees breaking the previous record of 64 degrees, which was set in 2016 and equaled in 2020."

[...]

"The stubborn heat wave finally died down some by Friday, June 21st, as cooler air arrived behind the passing cold front. John Eckman
Heaven 17, The Luxury Gap, 1983 on Virgin

Heaven 17 included Martyn Ware and Ian Criag Marsh who had been founding members of The Human League – Glenn Gregory took the place of Philip Oakey to make Heaven 17.

This was their second studio album (and best selling album) – with the single “Temptation” being the best known hit.

My copy, via Pitchfork Records in Concord NH, is a UK pressing from CBS’s Aston Clinton plant. John Eckman
Steve Earle, Guitar Town, 1986 on MCA Records

Earle’s debut album from the mid-eighties – note the proud “Digital Recording” stamp on the cover (where now you’d see “All Analog” promoted). Topped the country charts, and the title single made #7 on the country singles charts.

I think Earle’s really matured into a wonderful elder statesman of a certain kind of roots / Americana that is bigger than just country or rock charts – but you can see his strengths even through some of the 80s production. Here the label’s presenting him as some kind of John Cougar / Bruce Springsteen manque.

My copy via Pitchfork Records in Concord NH

#1980s #1986 #7_ #Americana #ConcordNH #Country #MCARecords #PitchforkRecords #Rock #Roots #SteveEarle #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylfinds

nikkiana
Why is it when I'm just about to wind down for bed, the Earth decides, "Hey, why don't we send you a little bitty 2.7 earthquake for Christmas so you don't sleep on the day before you're supposed to travel because you're gonna be so wound up reading up about how earthquakes are measured because it's going to be your new special interest for the next 24 hours.... As a treat!" and now I can't sleep because I'm too busy reading about earthquakes.

#NewHampshire #ConcordNH

Rep. Eric Gallager (no "h"!)
Concord Area Transit (my local public transportation) appears to have gone fare-free while I wasn't paying attention; bus driver isn't making any of us pay... so that's cool! #ConcordNH

I'm not really sure how many New Hampshire arts people I'm connected via the Fediverse, but I recently found out that there's going to be an arts and crafts centric thrift store moving into where the old CVS used to be in downtown Concord, and I'm absolutely obsessed with this idea and feels like there should be more of this everywhere.

They're taking donations and should be open by the end of the month according to their Facebook page.
