#consumerism

people often bemoan the fact that we could survive on one income in the 1950s. Part of the reason may be that we needed less stuff. Houses were a quarter the size, we could only fit a quarter of our possessions in those houses. People knew how to fix their own appliances and mend their clothes. One reason that we are a slave to the capitalist system is our lifestyle choices #capitalism #consumerism #ThoughtForTheDay

Call me crazy but i think banning consumer single use plastics (outside the medical industry) would have more green impact than EVs.

I stopped having the debate after a man insisted his 5 EVs were more green than any ICE.
Yeah, dude, the greener option would be one EV in ten years not 5.

What’s the point of going #green if #consumerism offsets any progress?

:heart_trans: It’s #PrideMonth, and just so you know, I’m a #GenderFluid person, proudly #bisexual and #queer, living in Bergen, Norway.

❤️ I’m really into topics like #Anarchism, #Syndicalism, #LGBTQIA issues, #Buddhism, #Psychedelic culture, #Psytrance, and #Debian.

🚫 On the other hand, I’m not a fan of #Windows, #Consumerism, #Capitalism, #Fascism, #Juche, #Tankies, #Money, #Apple, or #Roads, those just don’t sit right with me.

:pingunootnoot: I usually keep most of my posts on #Pixelfed, except for the occasional #meme that pops up here on #Mastodon.

:ablobcatbouncefast: If you want to see more of my queer, gender-fluid, bisexual journey, feel free to follow me over on Pixelfed!

‘Plain English’ with Derek Thompson
‘Is Pop Culture Worse Than Ever?’

This podcast explains quite brilliantly how and why new artists today have such a hard time finding an audience.

Spencer Kornhaber and host Derek Thompson talk about the, what Derek calls, ‘Four Horsemen of the Cultural Apocalypse’ — Stagnation, Cynicism, Isolation, and Attention Rot.

(Downside: you’ll have to get through an annoying ad right in the beginning; you might want to skip the first 44 seconds.)

Spencer Kornhaber’s essay for The Atlantic that sparked parts of the conversation:

In film, Hollywood has become addicted to the regurgitation of familiar IP. In visual art, critics bemoan the straitjacket of political correctness. On TV, as Derek told Bill Simmons, we're in a Gilded Age of television, where every prestigious show looks absolutely amazing—but that gilded veneer often covers up for dull storytelling. What do these trends all have in common? The slow decline of modern media. This month, The Atlantic's Spencer Kornhaber published a blockbuster essay, "Is This the Worst-Ever Era of American Pop Cu...

"[Minimalism is] standing in a collapsing society, surrounded by endless noise and glittery bullshit, and choosing silence - just choosing silence."

"Minimalism is the new “abundance.” What if everything you own is making you miserable? Less is more, more or less. Consumerism and materialism is ruining our world, but simple living is building steam. In this brutally honest video, I tell the story of how I ditched consumerism, gave capitalism the finger, and found unexpected peace in a folding chair and one spoon. Minimalism isn’t aesthetic—it’s survival. If you’ve ever felt suffocated by your stuff, your debt, or your life… this one’s for you."

So many great thoughts - strongly recommend taking your time to watch this video and really LISTEN undistracted!
